"Fear not, Lottie. Your well-being is now my eternal responsibility," declared Joshua Quinn after releasing his grip on Charlotte Miller. He planned to marry her as his second wife, with no family ties or servitude obligations standing in the way.

Charlotte’s gratitude was interrupted by news of Miss Stewart's engagement cancellation. Energized, Joshua called for his attire and finest treasures to propose marriage to Miss Stewart, leaving Charlotte speechless.

Reflecting on the night, Charlotte prepared for a calming bath. Despite Joshua's intense urgency, she felt an unfamiliar joy.

Three years prior, orphaned Charlotte attempted to sell herself for her mother's burial.

Prince Joshua's kindness altered her fate. She could serve him in his study. This unique privilege granted her privacy and a special place in his world.

Once, Joshua remarked, "If you can read, prepare the ink for me from now on."

Chapter 1 A Twist of Fate
"Fear not, Lottie. Your well-being is now my eternal responsibility." As dawn crept into the chamber, Joshua Quinn lifted himself from Charlotte Miller's body, the traces of his earlier passion still lingering. "In a month, you'll officially be mine. With no family to claim you, a simple contract will suffice." Charlotte, struggling to mask her discomfort, was about to express her gratitude when a guard burst in. "Prince Joshua, Miss Stewart has broken her engagement with the Minister of Revenue's son." In an instant, Joshua sprang into action, his calm demeanor replaced by urgency. As maids rushed to his side with garments and accessories, he ordered sharply, "Prepare a swift horse! Retrieve the finest jewels and the emperor's red coral for my proposal to Miss Stewart!" With single-minded determination, he strode out, leaving Charlotte's words unspoken. An oppressive silence settled over the room. As a mere maid tasked with grinding ink and preparing parchment, even a modest chamber was a privilege Joshua had granted her. Surveying the bruises scattered across her skin, reminders of the night's fervor, Charlotte stared at the door Joshua had slammed behind him. She gathered her resolve to stand, dress, and fetch water for her aching body. It had been a night of firsts for Charlotte, Joshua's urgent passion overwhelming her. Yet a faint spark of happiness stirred in her heart. Three years earlier, at thirteen, famine's cruel hand had driven her and her mother to seek refuge in a crumbling shrine. Her world shattered when she returned with half a bowl of soup to find her mother gone. Desperate and destitute, she tucked a blade of grass into her hair and dragged her mother's body to the market, willing to sell herself just to afford a proper burial. In her darkest hour, Prince Joshua's carriage had appeared. The furious coachman had raised his whip, ready to strike, when a calm voice stopped him. "She's only an orphan. There's no need for cruelty." Joshua extended his hand, elegant fingers offering a silver coin. Covered in grime and tears, Charlotte accepted it, bowing again and again in gratitude. "Thank you, sir. My name is Charlotte. I swear I'll repay this kindness, even if I must work like a beast of burden." Joshua studied her with quiet interest. "My mansion lacks no maids. If you wish, serve in my study for three years." After arriving at Joshua's estate, Charlotte discovered she held a rare privilege—the only maid permitted into his study, the only servant granted a private room. On her first day, she barely dared look at Joshua, keeping herself busy sweeping and organizing. Occasionally, a book caught her curiosity, and her gaze lingered a moment too long. Joshua's voice broke the silence. "If you can read, you might as well grind ink." Fearing she had angered him with her distraction, Charlotte dropped the cloth in her hand. "My apologies, Your Highness. I meant no disrespect." Silence followed, prompting her to glance up cautiously, only to find him already absorbed in his book. Dappled sunlight streamed through the window, casting a soft glow over his robe embroidered with green vines. In that moment, he seemed less like a distant prince and more like an ordinary young man. At that instant, Charlotte realized she was trapped. Her heart and hopes had already bound themselves to him. Though she knew she was only there to repay a debt and had no right to such dreams, she remained diligent and reserved—until last night, when Joshua, drunk with wine, came to her chamber. Now, time slipped steadily away. Only one month remained of her three-year pledge.
