Lucia Bellandi was never supposed to marry Matteo Moretti. That role belonged to her older sister, Sofia, the polished Bellandi daughter chosen to seal an alliance between two of Vesper Harbor’s most powerful families. Then Sofia disappears. With a multibillion-dollar waterfront project hanging in the balance, lenders watching for weakness, rival families circling, and decades of Bellandi-Moretti distrust ready to surface, Lucia is pulled into the crisis because she is the one person capable of keeping the alliance from collapsing. At first, she is only meant to help preserve Sofia’s authority until she returns. Then the deadlines tighten. The legal options narrow. And the families begin building the machinery for a replacement bride.Matteo Moretti has spent his entire life preparing to inherit an empire built on shipping, logistics, money, loyalty, and carefully controlled violence. He agreed to marry Sofia because the alliance made sense. When she vanishes, accepting Lucia instead is not romantic. It is strategic. But Lucia refuses to become a convenient substitute. She keeps her own money. Her own work. Her own boundaries. And when she discovers the marriage gives her more power over Harbor Crown than either family expected, she begins using it.Matteo expects a reluctant political wife.Instead, he gets a woman who challenges his decisions, catches risks his people miss, and refuses to let protection become control.Lucia expects a cold mafia heir who sees her as the wrong sister.Instead, she finds a man willing to listen when she is right, dangerous enough to protect what matters, and disciplined enough to make trusting him increasingly difficult to resist.Meanwhile, Sofia’s disappearance stops looking like an escape from an unwanted marriage. Before she vanished, she was investigating hidden companies, suspicious financing, political intermediaries, and a network buried inside Harbor Crown itself. Someone knew she was looking.Someone wanted the two families unstable. And Lucia’s marriage may have placed her directly inside the trap Sofia uncovered. As criminal dynasties turn against one another, old betrayals surface, succession battles begin, and Harbor Crown becomes the center of a war fought through money, politics, secrets, and blood, Lucia and Matteo will have to decide whether their forced alliance can become something neither family planned.Because Lucia may have entered House Moretti as the replacement bride. She has no intention of remaining anyone’s replacement.

No Answer
Lucia woke before anyone knocked. The sound was not loud. That made it worse. Low voices moved beyond the bedroom door, clipped short whenever they reached the stretch of hallway outside her room. Shoes crossed carpet with the measured care of people who had been told not to disturb her and had no intention of leaving. Somewhere farther away, a phone vibrated, stopped, vibrated again. A woman murmured something about timing. A man answered in the flat, contained tone Lucia had already learned to file under security. She did not move at first. The door was closed. The lock was still engaged. No one had come in while she slept. Matteo had kept that boundary, or his household had kept it because he had ordered them to. Either way, the fact should have loosened something in her chest. It did not. Privacy, she thought, and then corrected herself. Privacy inside a perimeter. Privacy watched from the other side. She sat up slowly. The room Matteo had given her was elegant, quiet, and impersonal enough to make every personal object she had brought feel exposed. Her phone rested on the side table. The clothes she had worn yesterday were folded over a chair with a precision that was not hers. Through the door came another murmur, then the soft, weighty shift of garment bags or boxes being set down. The wedding had begun without needing her to agree that morning had arrived. Lucia reached for her phone, stopped before her fingers closed around it, and made herself look around first. Door. Windows. Bathroom. Shoes. Bag. Copy of the contract. The small defensive inventory steadied her more than breathing did. Conditions first. Access second. Changes third. There was a soft bump against the wall outside, then instant stillness. No one entered. The restraint mattered. The waiting mattered too. Lucia swung her feet to the floor. She would open the door when she was ready. The first knock came only after she had crossed the room and put her hand on the lock. Lucia waited one full beat before turning it. Two attendants stood outside with a security guard stationed several paces behind them. One woman held a garment bag as if the contents had legal standing. The other carried boxes, shoes, veil, understructure, all the quiet machinery by which a woman could be converted into an answer. "Mrs. Bellandi," the first attendant said, catching herself before she could choose the wrong future name. "We're here to help you dress." Lucia looked at the garment bag. The dress was not visible, but it filled the hallway anyway. Tailored fabric, arranged schedule, public expectation, Sofia's empty place pressed into ivory and fastenings. A life other people were trying to hang on her body before she had seen the final terms that made it survivable. "Put it there," Lucia said, stepping back. The attendants obeyed. One reached for the zipper. "No." The hand stopped. Lucia kept her voice level. Raised voices let people call a woman overwhelmed. Level voices made refusal harder to decorate. "No dressing. No hair. No photographs. I want Julian Ferraro with the final contract packet, and I want Gabriel's evidence update from Sofia's apartment." The second attendant glanced at the guard. "The schedule is very tight," she said carefully. "Then everyone involved should be motivated to meet the conditions quickly." The guard shifted as if the contract were outside his training. It probably was. Lucia reached for the copy on the side table and opened it where she had marked the clause herself. "Information briefing before any public appearance connected to the threat. Final review before ceremony execution. Those were Matteo's terms because he agreed to them." The hallway changed temperature without anyone moving. Matteo arrived ten minutes later in a black suit and controlled irritation. He took in the attendants, the unopened dress, the contract in Lucia's hand, and Lucia herself standing barefoot in the room he had promised not to enter uninvited. "What do you need?" he asked. "What you owe." His expression barely moved. The schedule pressed at his back. She could see it in the almost invisible tightening around his mouth, in the way the guard waited for an order instead of instruction. For one clean second, efficient containment would have been easy. Lucia held his gaze and let him choose. Matteo turned his head. "Get Julian. Bring Gabriel. No one touches the dress until she says so." The attendants lowered their eyes. The guard moved. Lucia did not thank him. He did not ask her to.
