The ringing of her phone cut through the noise of the traffic. The screen displayed an unfamiliar number. She answered immediately. “Hello?” “Am I speaking with Miss Maya Collins?” Her fingers tightened around the phone. “Yes.” “This is Saint John’s Hospital. Your father had another episode this evening.” Everything around her seemed to slow down. “What kind of episode?” she asked, her voice shaking with uneasiness. “His blood pressure dropped significantly. He’s stable for now, but the doctor would like to see you regarding his treatment plan first thing tomorrow morning.” Maya took a deep breath, her mind unstable “I’ll come by tomorrow.” “please do,Miss.” the voice on the other side of the phone continued speaking “The Doctors has found a way for his treatment,but your attention is needed.” the voice said politely. Maya was surprised, her voice slightly excited “ I will be there.” “ok, see you tomorrow Miss Collins.” The call ended. For several seconds, she simply stood by the entrance of the exclusive club, staring at the dark screen of her phone lost in thoughts. A week ago, through her best friend help. She secured a job interview in one of the top companies in New York City. Her interview was scheduled in two weeks time. A real job. A real salary. Enough to pay hospital bills and maybe move her father to the VIP ward for good treatment. If she got the job half of her problems had been solved. If……….. lost in her thought her best friend came to her quietly. “Maya!” She looked up to see her best friend hurrying towards her. Isabella was all sunshine and energetic, dressed in a dark blue dress that looked expensive even though Maya knew that her parents were rich. “Why do you look like someone had a fight with you?” Isabella asked. Maya gave a small smile. “Hospital called.” Isabella expressions softened immediately. “Your dad?” She nodded. “is he okay?” “Yes,for now.” Isabella looked at her feeling sad “You kept rejecting my help.” Maya gave a happy laugh and slipped an arm through hers. “You know me, am as stubborn as a calf.” “Yes, right.” Isabella dramatically rolls her eyes at her. “by the way, let’s forget about hospital talk and do what brings us here tonight.” “I don’t know bella --” “Nope, don’t change your mind now Maya.” Isabella shook her head. “ You promise to go celebrate with me.” “But I haven’t yet done the interview, Isabella.” “Don’t worry okay, the celebration is like a good luck charm.” Maya couldn’t believe what she was hearing and made a fake gasp “Oh mine, how sure are you that I will get accepted.” “I am.” Isabella laughed softly. “Come on, let’s go in.” Isabella said while pulling Maya “Just one night. A few drinks. Music. Then tomorrow you can go back to the hospital.” The bar was unlike any place Maya had ever been. Soft golden light glowed from a crytal chandeliers. The air smelled of expensive wines and perfumes she couldn’t pronounce. Men in suits and women in elegant dresses move through the room as if they belonged there. Music drifted from the stage, soft and sensual. “ Wow, it’s amazing.” Maya believed what she was seeing. “i know right.” “let’s look for our seat.” A waiter walked to them and politely speak” This way, Miss.” He lead them to a private seat. Pour for them some glass of wine and went his way. A man sat in one of the shadowed booths. He was surrounded with business partner seeking favors from him. He bored of the conversation he was having with them. He noticed when Maya and her friend enter the bar. He was captivated by Maya’s every smile and laughter. Maya could feel that someone was watching her. She felt uncomfortable. Her friend notice her discomfort and felt bad. “Are you alright?”Isabella asked her. “I felt someone graze on me just now.” “Wow, no way!” she exclaimed. Maya tries looking around to find who was staring at her. Her gaze landed on stranger. She saw that he was surrounded by people who was trying to please him. That strange sensation. As if someone was watching her. She turned. The stranger from the booth was still there. His face remained half hidden by shadows, impossible to read. But his eyes where fixed on hers, neither of them looked away. Then someone approached him and said something. He rose to his feet. Tall. Far taller than she’s imagined. He adjusted the cuff of his sleeve and spoke to the people who were with him.
