CHAPTER 1: THE BEGINNING OF IT ALL
Krystal threw her phone onto the couch with a frustrated groan. "Ugh! All these dating apps have nothing impressive to offer," she exclaimed, burying her face in her hands. They both laughed, and the sound echoed comfortably in Shania’s small apartment. The two had been inseparable ever since they first met 10 years ago in the laundry room of their building. What started as fleeting greetings over missing socks and detergent tips soon evolved into movie marathons, midnight heart-to-hearts, and spontaneous adventures around the city. Their bond was the kind of rare magic—steady, safe, and unshakable. But one morning, everything changed. Krystal’s phone buzzed with a message, and the moment she opened it, her heart sank. Her landlord had sent a notice: the rental agreement was ending, and the apartment was no longer available. There was no offer to renew. No warning. Just a firm farewell. Her hands trembled as she stared at the screen, panic swelling in her chest. What now? She had nowhere to go—no family to turn to, no backup plan. Krystal had come to this city with little more than a suitcase full of dreams, leaving behind a family who had never given her the love she deserved. For 10 years, she had fought to build a life on her own, brick by brick, and now, it was slipping away with one message. Without hesitation, she dialed Shania’s number. The moment her friend answered, the floodgates opened. “Shania, I…I have to leave my apartment.” Krystal’s voice cracked as she spoke. “The lease is up, and the landlady won’t rent it anymore. I have no idea where I’m supposed to go!” Shania’s calm voice cut through the storm of Krystal’s thoughts. “Take a deep breath, babe. It’s going to be okay.” “But I don’t have time to find a new place! I—” “Krystal,” Shania interrupted gently but firmly, “come live with us.” The suggestion stunned Krystal into silence. “What?” she whispered, her voice shaky. “We’re moving into the new villa next week,” Shania said with excitement, as if she’d been waiting to share the news. “There’s more than enough space. You’re basically family, Krystal. Just come with us. Problem solved.” A wave of relief washed over Krystal, though uncertainty still lingered at the edges. “Are you sure? I don’t want to intrude...” “Stop it. My brothers love you. My mom loves you. And you know I love you. You’re not intruding. You’re home.” Krystal felt warmth bloom in her chest at the word: home. For so long, she’d believed she didn’t deserve a place to belong. But with Shania and her family, she’d found something precious—a second chance at the love she’d never had growing up. “Okay,” Krystal whispered, her heart lighter. “I’ll come.” The following week flew by in a blur of moving boxes and goodbyes. The day they finally stood in front of the villa, the sun shone brilliantly against the sprawling white walls and terracotta roof. It was a beautiful, two-story house surrounded by lush gardens, with tall windows that invited the sunlight to spill in. The villa felt warm and inviting, like a promise of new beginnings. “Race you to the door!” Shania laughed, grabbing Krystal’s hand and dragging her toward the entrance. Inside, the whole family buzzed with excitement. Shania’s brothers were already arguing over whose room had the better view, and their mother hummed happily as she explored the new kitchen. Krystal, standing in the heart of it all, felt something unfamiliar yet wonderful bloom within her—belonging. She and Shania claimed rooms side by side, their laughter filling the corridors as they unpacked. They spent hours arranging furniture, trading ideas for how they’d decorate, and dreaming up plans for late-night chats on the balcony. That first night in the villa, after everyone had gone to bed, the two friends slipped out to the garden, each wrapped in cozy blankets. They lay on the soft grass under a sky scattered with stars, feeling the peace of the moment settle over them. “I still can’t believe this is real,” Krystal murmured, her head resting on Shania’s shoulder. “Believe it,” Shania whispered, tilting her head to rest against Krystal’s. “This is just the beginning, Krystal. You’re not alone anymore.” Krystal turned to look at her friend, gratitude shimmering in her eyes. "I don’t know what I’d do without you, Shania." “You’ll never have to find out,” Shania whispered, her voice soft but resolute. And in that quiet garden, under the stars, Krystal knew with certainty that she was no longer just surviving—she was living. For the first time in a long time, she felt safe. She felt loved. And maybe, just maybe, she was exactly where she was always meant to be. The next morning, Krystal then decided to go down to the kitchen to get herself a much needed glass of cold water. She flipped her yellowish flowery summer dress through the stairs as she rushed straight to the fridge without paying much attention to her surroundings while humming away to herself her favourite tune. Krystal opens the refrigerator and grabs a glass of cold water, feeling the cool air surge out. The kitchen is silent save for the gentle hum of the refrigerator. She felt someone towering behind her as she is pouring the water. She turns slightly, startled to see her best friend's brother leaning against the counter with a laid-back smile on his face. He's tall, with that effortlessly attractive model's appearance. Even if she doesn't like him, there's something endearing and reassuring about him.Krystal knew Edward. She has met him a couple of times before whenever she went to visit shania in their old building. She knew he was a model and a hotshot among all the girls. But she never fancied him or paid him much attention. He just didn’t seem to appeal to her in anyway. She always thought there is something off putting and unsettling about him. Hence she chose to have minimal interactions with him whenever they met. Never beyond the basic greetings. “Didn’t expect to find you here,” he says, his voice smooth and relaxed. Krystal feels a flutter of awkwardness, but she manages with a smile. “Just grabbing some water. It’s been a long day.” Said Krystal He nods, taking a step closer, the space between him and Krystal charged with a kind of unspoken tension. He takes the glass of the cold water from Krystal’s hand and for a moment, the familiarity of the kitchen fades, leaving just the two of them looking into each other’s eyes. As he leans against the counter, Krystal notices the way his eyes catch the light, and she can’t help but feel a little flustered. It’s a brief encounter, but in that moment, it’s as if the world outside fades away, leaving a curious spark hanging in the air. She quickly let’s go of the water and turns back, heart racing a bit faster than usual, feeling a blend of confusion and unexpected excitement. “I have to go” murmurs Krystal , trying to maintain a casual tone as she steps back from the fridge, giving him a polite smile. As she heads towards the door, she catches his eye one last time, and for a brief moment, they both share a knowing look of something unspoken lingering in the air. Krystal then exits the kitchen, the encounter replaying in her mind as she feels the rush of unexpected emotions. Krystal’s mind raced as she left the kitchen, replaying the encounter with Edward over and over. She felt a mix of confusion and surprise. She had always viewed him as just Shania's brother—someone who was charming but not her type. Yet, in that moment, something shifted. His relaxed demeanor and that intense gaze had caught her off guard, stirring a flutter of emotions she didn’t expect. She questioned why she felt this way; perhaps it was the thrill of being in a new environment, or the comfort of being around Shania’s family. Still, there was a nagging discomfort. Why did she suddenly feel drawn to someone she had intentionally kept at arm's length? Krystal brushed her thoughts aside, reminding herself of her resolve to keep her distance. After all, she had chosen to cut ties with her past, including any potential complications that came with romantic entanglements. Yet, the memory of his warm smile lingered, making her heart race. She couldn’t help but wonder if this new chapter of her life would challenge her previous notions about herself and her feelings. As she settled into her new room, Krystal realized that living with Shania and her family would inevitably change things. The thought both excited and scared her. She needed time to process her feelings about Edward, and perhaps this encounter was a sign that new connections, even unexpected ones, could be part of her fresh start.
