Areya is the very first Vampire ever created. The world has been ravaged by Wraiths, humans that have been turned into unrecognizable monsters that are rabid for the flesh and blood of living things. In such a world, humans have entered into an agreement with Vampires; Vampires are to help protect humanity with their uncanny strength and speed and in return, humans will offer their life and their blood to Vampires of their choice, becoming Listed and therefore ensuring the protection of themselves and their families. However, there are humans who refuse this life, humans who live outside of Vampire Cities and into the wilds of the Wraith plagued lands where they can be free: they are known as Subversives.

Her Vampire Kin, Darius, hungers for more power. He hungers for a way to ensure that Vampires can truly reign over humanity. And to do that, he needs the secrets that only Areya knows. With the knowledge that Darius is searching for a journal Areya wrote centuries ago that contains the secrets of vampire kind, Areya races to find it first and finds herself in a camp full of Subversives. With a few who trust her, all who fear her and one Vampire Hunter among them who hates her, Areya will do all she can to keep these humans safe from Darius. But even for one as old and as strong as she, protecting those she cares for will be no easy task.
