You promised me

"Cassian?" I wrinkled my forehead, looking at the man I didn't want to see right now. "That's not what you expected, is it? Come here." Cassian opened the door wider. I tentatively took a step forward and left Cassian behind. "Hi Sara." Dillan's soft voice caught my attention. "Hi." I smiled. My eyes scanned the room I was standing in. The vintage décor gave the room an air of mystery. The small room I was standing in was followed by another huge room. I could see bookshelves neatly arranged in it. To my right, a fireplace and a few armchairs were quietly puffing away, giving the house a homely feel. "Come with me." Dillan waved his hand. I followed Dillan through the large living room. The kitchen was waiting behind the next door I stepped through. The light kitchen set gave the impression of luxury. In one corner of the kitchen was a large table and chairs. "Sit down and make yourself at home." Dillan smiled. "What's for dinner?" I watched as Dillan fidgeted in the kitchen. "Surprise." Dillan winked. "Need help?" I got up from the chair I'd managed to get comfortable on. "Sure, cut these up." Dillan nudged the table of vegetables "You live here alone?" I broke the awkward silence. "This used to be my parents' house, they left it to me after they died. Now I live with my brother." Dillan was concentrating on the frying pan. "Why does Cassian live here?" I wondered. "He shouldn't be here, but I can't change that. This is partly his home." Dillan shrugged. I was gone for a few minutes while I finished cutting up the rest of the vegetables. The kitchen was filled with the wonderful smell of food. Cassian's name and what he had done kept crossing my mind. "Are you all right?" Dillan's eyes lingered on mine. "Yes." I nodded, pushing the spatula with the vegetables away. "You're lying. You can tell me what's bothering you. "Dillan's soft voice sounded in the kitchen. These words sent a hurricane through my mind. One side of me wanted to tell everything, while the other side just told me to turn around and walk away. I didn't know if I could trust Dillan, I didn't know if he would believe me. I'm not sure I'll tell Dillan everything and my loved ones will stay safe. As Cassian said, whoever finds out next could be my loved one. "Cassian." I turned my eyes away from Dillan. "What did he do to you? Dillan frowned. "Nothing to me." My eyes went back to Dillan "Tell me what happened." Dillan tucked a strand of my hair behind my ear. "He killed Leo." My voice shook. "He did what?" Dillan furrowed her brow. "I killed Leo." Cassian's voice drifted around the kitchen. There was silence for a few seconds. I saw Dillan pick up the knife he'd put down and throw it straight at Cassian in one swift motion. He stopped the blade of the knife lightly with a few fingers in front of his face. "Not a bad throw, brother." Cassian smiled. I squinted my eyes at Cassian who was standing in the kitchen doorway. I saw him holding a glass in his hand that was half full of alcohol. His blue ring glistened on his hand and he looked at me intently. I didn't know what was outside me now, because I told Dillan the whole truth. Nevertheless, I felt safer around Dillan than when I was alone. That is such a plus in this awkward situation. "Cassian has something to say?" Dillan's voice turned cold. "Brother, you wanted him to go away, so he did," Cassian sipped from his glass. "We had a deal." Dillan looked angrily towards Cassian. "Bro, there's no need for drama." Cassian raised his hands in front of him as if in defense. "You promised me." Dillan stepped closer to Cassian. "What's going on here?" I sneered at Dillan and Cassian. "Come on, brother, tell your lady what's going on here" Cassian laughed and waved before disappearing into the doorway. "Let's sit down and eat." Dillan's voice sounded calmer. He returned to his seat in the kitchen. He picked up two large white plates and set the food on the table. We sat down without saying a word, and an uncomfortable silence hung in the air.  The dinner that Dillan made was unbelievably delicious. "I'm sorry." Dillan suddenly spoke. "For what?" I looked up from my food. Dillan was already staring intently in my direction. I waited patiently for a few seconds for him to find the right words to explain the situation that had just happened. Although I'm not sure it's possible to explain everything logically. "You trust me? Dillan raised an eyebrow. I'm a little hesitant to trust Dillan, because I've only just met him. I looked into his brown eyes, and my gut told me to trust him. "Yes." I smiled. "You're not wavering on your word at all?" Dillan rose from his chair. "I don't trust your brother, but I trust you." I rose from my chair. "Come with me Sarah." Dillan held out her hand to me. I took his hand and followed. Soon we were striding through the guest room with the fireplace crackling softly. Cassian was sitting in one of the armchairs, staring into the fire. I could see a book and a pen placed next to him. "This way." Dillan pointed to the stairs leading to the second floor. "I hope you're not taking me to the bedroom?" I smiled broadly. "I'm not that perverted." Dillan laughed. Twenty-one steps later, I entered a long corridor. I could see doors on either side, probably leading to bedrooms. I followed Dillan who led me to the end of the corridor. There was a large glass door leading to a balcony. Dillan opened the door and let me go first. I could see the lights of the town houses in front of me. I walked to the balcony rail, leaned back and looked into the distance. "It's so beautiful." I said to myself under my nose. "It really is." Dillan stood next to me. "May I ask? I turned my gaze to Dillan. I could see his face looking somewhere in the city. Then he turned and looked straight at me with his brown eyes. "Of course. Ask me anything." Dillan smiled. "Why do you have so many books?" I turned my eyes to the city. "Cassian likes to read." Dillan shrugged. "And what do you like?" I mused. "Oh, I like travelling. Dillan's eyes were on the cities. "Why did Cassian kill Leo?" I asked bluntly. "Trust me he didn't mean to." Dillan replied in a calm voice. "Are you defending him?" I rolled my eyes looking at Dillan. "I'm not saying that murder is excusable." Dillan's eyes darted to me. "I'm going to have to live with it." I sighed. "It'll be okay, he won't hurt anyone else." Dillan looked into my eyes. "I hope so." I smiled half a smile. "Let's go inside it's getting chilly." Dillan turned towards the balcony door. We took the stairs to the first floor but the guest room was empty. My eyes darted to the large antique clock that hung above the wild front door. It was already showing well after nine o'clock in the evening. "Oh shit." I cursed softly. "You're late getting home?" Dillan followed my gaze. "Yeah." I nodded. "I hope we'll see Sarah again." Dillan opened the door to the house. I paused in the doorway of the house and leaned over and kissed him on the cheek. I could feel the corners of his lips lift and he smiled.   "Bye." I climbed the steps from the terrace. I heard the door of the house slam shut. I hurried home at a brisk pace to make Dad worry as little as possible. As I walked, I took my phone out of my pocket and looked to see if there were any messages or calls. To my misfortune, there was one voice message from Chloe. I quickly tapped on the screen to make the voice recording go away.  "I don't know where you got to so late, but your dad called. Don't worry I've got your back. When you get home, call. Kiss Chloe." I shoved my phone back in my pocket and quickened my pace. Soon I could see my house in the distance with the light on in the windows. After a quick few minutes of walking, I unlocked the front door and stepped inside. "Sarah, is that you?" Dad's voice came from the kitchen. "I'm so back." I exclaimed as I took off my shoes. "Don't forget to eat dinner." Dad exclaimed. "I'm not hungry." I was already climbing the stairs to my room. I didn't hear Dad's voice again. I closed the door of my room and sat on my bed. I dialed Chloe's number on my phone and pressed the green button. "Hi, where have you been?" Chloe's voice purred on the other end of the phone. "I was with Dillan. I forgot to mention it." I smiled half a smile. "Chloe you could have told me." Chloe said indignantly. "I'll tell you everything tomorrow, okay?" I chuckled quietly. "Absolutely, goodnight Sarah." Chloe put the receiver down. Before I could say goodbye, the end-of-conversation tone rang in my ears. I was already in bed and snoozing. I was awoken by a new message on my phone screen. An unfamiliar number was writing: "Thank you for a wonderful evening together - Dillan." I smiled and, not having the strength to write back, just fell asleep. A quiet knock on the door made it hard to close my eyes. I looked around the room, which was quite bright. "May I come in?" Lucy spoke on the other side of the door. "Sure." I sat up in bed. I saw Lucy come through the door of my room. Her black dress reached her knees and her hair was neatly decorated with a black bow. "Are you coming with us or with Chloe?" Lucy stopped a few feet from my bed. "What time is it?" I rubbed my sleepy eyes. "9.30am, Chloe will be here in half an hour." Lucy glanced at the clock on the wall. "I'll go with Chloe. I'll meet you there." I put my hand on Lucy's shoulder. Lucy smiled and soon disappeared up the stairs to the first floor. I slowly rolled out of bed and took a shower. I pulled a long lace dress out of the wardrobe. I neatly braided my hair and slipped on my high heels. The sound of a car horn came from the street. I glanced out the window and saw Chloe's car parked at the curb. I quickly ran up the stairs and locked the front door and walked towards the car. "Hi." Chloe said hello as I settled into the car seat. "Hi." I fastened my seatbelt. I turned my head forward and stared at the pose, but we didn't move from the spot. Then I looked at Chloe with a questioning look. "Why are we still standing? I wrinkled my forehead as I looked at Chloe. "I want to tell you something." Chloe put her hands on the steering wheel. "Are you okay?" I worried, watching my best friend. "I gave Dillan your number." Chloe looked me in the eye. "That's it?" I barely held back a laugh. "I thought you'd be angry." Chloe sneered at me. "No kidding. The look on your face before you said it. I thought you'd done something terrible." I smiled widely. "Besides, remember what we talked about yesterday?" Chloe started the car. "Yeah, about the history report." I remembered our conversation. "I found this idea in the library. In the book, there was a name that belonged to the princes who fought for the castle, and it said Harrison." Chloe said briefly. "You became obsessed with that legend." I rolled my eyes. "It mentions small details like rings. According to the legend, the princes' mother gave them rings on the eve of their fight to signify their strength and devotion." Chloe continued.
