I quickly closed the paper and put it back in the envelope. My thoughts were trying to make sense of this brutal information. Part of me thought it was a stupid joke, and the other part of me wanted to run away.
"What is this?" Chloe nodded towards me.
"Nothing important." I smiled, averting my eyes from the letter.
"Really? " Chloe raised an eyebrow.
"Girls, quiet." The teacher's voice echoed through the classroom.
Chloe and I looked at each other and laughed softly. She gave me that "You'll explain everything when class is over" look. Chloe flipped open her textbook and pretended to listen to the teacher. Meanwhile, I turned my eyes to the clock that was hanging on the classroom wall. I looked out of the window overlooking the park. I saw a silhouette standing next to a tree. When I looked more closely, I saw two green eyes looking directly in my direction. Cassian, that was the first thought that crossed my mind. I shook my head and raised my hand, waiting for the teacher's permission to speak.
"Yes Sarah?" The teacher said.
"I need to go to the girls' room." I smiled.
"Go on." The teacher gave permission.
The next thing in front of me was the corridor leading to the school exit. Even though I knew it could be dangerous I needed to know the truth. I pushed the school door open and quickly felt a jolt and my back hit the wall.
"Where are you rushing to? Cassian's eyes were staring right at me.
"Your note?" I asked, looking into his eyes questioningly.
He ran his green eyes intently over my form then smiled.
"Dillan wanted him be dead, so he dead now." Cassian's cold voice rang in the air.
"I can't believe you even dare to show your face in front of me." My eyes were wet with tears, but at the same time I seemed to be full of strength.
"He was a hindrance. "Cassian calmly replied.
"I don't think the police will agree with your opinion." I glared angrily at Cassian.
I turned around and was about to walk towards the school entrance when I felt Cassian's hands on my shoulders. In one swift motion, he turned me to face him and looked straight at me.
"You'll tell someone maybe next can be your beloved dad or maybe your little sister Lucy?" Cassian's eyes seemed to darken.
"You're kidding, right?" I raised an eyebrow.
"Try and find out." Dillan dipped an eye and smiled half a smile.
I quickly hurried out the door and back to school, and soon I was sitting in my classroom. I listened intently to the lesson I had already missed part of.
"What took you so long?" Chloe stared at me.
"Girl stuff." I shrugged.
Soon the bell rang announcing the end of class. Without waiting for anything, I packed my stuff into my backpack and headed towards the classroom exit.
"Where are you going?" Chloe snapped at the window.
"Let's go to lunch, I'm starving." I turned towards the cafeteria.
"What was in that envelope?" Chloe stepped alongside looking at me out of the corner of her eye.
"Nothing important." I smiled as I dipped my eye.
Soon Chloe and I were sitting in the cafeteria.
"Hi girls." Lucy greeted as she sat down next to me.
"Hi." smiled Chloe.
"Are you coming to the funeral tomorrow?" Lucy bite apple.
"Of course." Chloe looked at Lucy.
"Is there any other news? Perhaps you've spoken to Finn?" I turned towards Lucy.
"He told me that the armoury will be held in the main building so that everyone can have a proper farewell." Lucy's eyes darted out the window.
"What time?" Chloe turned to Lucy.
"In the morning, so classes are cancelled. Well it's about time for me." Lucy got up from the table.
"Bye." Chloe waved.
I ate my lunch in silence and tried not to think about what Cassian had done. He had threatened me that he would deal with the people I loved if I told anyone about what he did. These and similar thoughts followed me through the rest of the day at school. Strangely enough, Chloe didn't ask any more intrusive questions about the mysterious letter. When the last bell rang, I knew what I had to do. Without waiting for anything, I got up from my desk and headed towards the school exit. Chloe wasn't with me because she had stayed at school for an upcoming school event. She wanted to volunteer and help plan everything. I didn't mind her wanting to do that because I needed time to get my head together. Soon I was walking along the grey city path that led to my house.
"Hi." Dillan's voice reached my ears.
He was all mysterious, standing on the path to my house. He looked straight at me with his brown eyes, standing leaning against a tree near the fence of the house.
"What are you doing here?" I smiled, nodding my head in the direction of my house.
"Would you agree to spend the evening with me?" Dillan took a slow step towards me.
"Is it a date?" I laughed, smiling.
"Maybe, it's just to get to know each other better." Dillan smiled a little.
"Where are we meeting?" I looked at Dillan questioningly.
"Perhaps my house would be suitable? I'm making dinner." Dillan stepped even closer to me.
"You know how to cook?" I laughed, fixing a strand of hair.
"You'll be able to appreciate my culinary skills." Dillan smiled.
"Okay, then give me your address and what time do you want me to show up at your door? I looked into Dillan's dark coffee coloured eyes.
"Five o'clock would be just right." Dillan held out the folded piece of paper to me.
"Is this your address?" I lowered my eyes in surprise at the slip of paper in his hands.
"Yes." Dillan smiled.
"You have it written down already? How did you know I'd agree?" I laughed.
"A hunch. " He shrugged.
"I'll see you tonight." I waved as I walked towards my house.
I walked quickly towards the front door. I wanted to reach my bed as soon as possible and stretch my legs after a hard and stressful day at school. The house was completely empty. Without waiting for anything, I walked up the stairs to my room and nap on my bed. Pulling out my phone, I glanced at the clock, which read three o'clock. Thinking I had plenty of time before my meeting with Dillan, I headed for the shower. After taking care of myself and the outfit I would be wearing tonight, I turned on some music to try and ease the tension that was building inside me. Suddenly the phone rang and made me jump out of my seat.
"Yes ?" I put the phone to my ear.
"Sara did you start doing a history report of the town?" Chloe was curious.
"Chloe we still have a whole week." I laughed out loud.
"Never mind, I want to tell you what I found." Chloe sounded enthusiastic.
"Come on tell me what's so important." I lay back on the bed.
"You know that legend that Dillan told?" Chloe said.
"Yeah, what about her? I stared at the ceiling of the room.
"Since the internet is full of versions of the same story I decided to look it up in the library." I could guarantee that Chloe was smiling.
"Why are you telling me this?" I didn't understand the reason.
"Wait, now the interesting part." Chloe laughed.
"Girls I'm home." Dad's voice came from the first floor.
"Wait a second Chloe I have to talk to daddy." I got out of bed.
I ran up the stairs to the first floor without waiting for anything. In the kitchen I found my dad reading the newspaper and sipping hot coffee.
"How's your day, dear?" Dad looked up from the newspaper.
"Good." I smiled.
"Anything wrong?" Dad looked me over from head to toe.
"I'm going to meet Chloe later and I'll be late at home." I stood in the kitchen doorway.
"Okay, just don't stay up all night girls with a killer prowling the streets." Dad's voice was full of worry.
"A killer?" I wrinkled my forehead.
The first thought that came to my mind after these words of my dad was Cassian's menacing look and his greenish eyes looking at me. I shook my head and came back to reality.
"Wasn't that suicide?" I looked at my dad.
"The police are reporting it as a suicide so that people are less likely to panic." Dad explained calmly.
"You realize you don't have to do that, Dad?" I looked into his eyes.
"I know darling that I'm a policeman who's off duty. I care about the welfare of our people." Dad shrugged his shoulders.
"I don't want anything to happen to you." I was worried.
"I'll be all right. And you're not going to be late for town with Choe?" Dad looked at the wall clock.
"Damn." My eyes drifted toward the clock.
Without waiting for anything, I turned around and headed up the stairs to my room. I quickly changed into my clothes for my meeting with Dillan. I looked in the mirror again to make sure I looked decent. The black jeans made my legs look longer, the white blouse accentuated my waist nicely. My favourite pendant rested lightly on my neck, and small red earrings glittered in my ears.
"Well it's about time." I told to myself.
I grabbed my phone from the table and headed for the front door. I was on my way out when Dad's voice reached my ears:
"Good evening girls." Dad's voice came from the kitchen.
I didn't say anything, I just stepped outside where it was getting dark. I put my hand in my jacket pocket and pulled out the piece of paper that Dillan had given me. I quickly unfolded the slip and scanned the address with my eyes: "Forestroad 64" was the address of the house in handwriting. I took one last look at the clock on my phone, which read 4.40pm. I walked slowly towards the street Dillan had pointed out to me.
"60, 62, 64." I looked up at the house.
In front of me stood a huge two-storey house built of light grey bricks. Light shone in several of the house's windows. A path led to the front door. A huge flower garden beautifully adorned the foundations of the house, and night lamps gave the house a mysterious air. I couldn't believe that someone lived in such a big house. Not wanting to linger any longer, I walked across the courtyard and climbed the stairs and knocked loudly on the door. For a few moments nothing was heard, but after a few minutes there was a creaking sound outside the door. A few seconds later, the door opened wide.
"Good evening Sarah." Cassian's voice reached my ears.
