A week later, Pauline was sitting on the floor with near the big Philco radio playing checkers with Leo sr. Johnny brought in an arm load of wood and added a couple of large pieces to the pot-bellied stove. “Ha, ha,” Pauline said laughing as she triple jumped three of her opponent’s kings.
“Well, I’ll be damned!” Johnny’s dad was dismayed but pleasingly surprised at the skill of his future daughter-in-law. “Is that any way to treat your future father-in-law?”
“Speaking of in-laws, have you two picked a date yet?” Annie, who was sitting across the room asked.
