Chapter 1: The Mark in the Mud
The iron-rich scent of blood cut through the damp pine needles of the Whispering Woods, but it wasn't the blood that made Eliana’s heart hammer against her ribs. It was the low, guttural vibration rolling through the earth beneath her boots.
Shifters.
Eliana pressed her back against the ancient oak, her breathing shallow and deliberate. Her silver-blonde hair was caked with mud, tucked tightly beneath her leather hood. In her right hand, a thin sliver of elemental light flickered across her knuckles—a dangerous, forbidden glow in a forest patrolled by the Silverfang Clan.
"Search every ridge!" a deep, commanding voice boomed through the fog, sending a shiver straight down Eliana’s spine. "She’s a Mage. She carries light magic. Do not let her reach the Veil."
Eliana closed her eyes, her pulse thumping wildly in her throat. She knew that voice. Anyone in the borderlands knew that voice. It belonged to Kaelen Vane—the High Alpha of the Silverfangs, the Black Wolf of the Wildlands, and the man who had ordered the purge of her order seven years ago.
A twig snapped five yards to her left.
Before she could draw a full breath, a massive shadow burst through the mist. A warrior in dark leather armor lunged, his claws extended, his amber eyes glowing with predatory fury.
Eliana didn't scream. She ducked beneath the wild swipe, spun on her heel, and thrust her palm forward. A concentrated blast of kinetic air erupted from her hand, slamming the shifter backward into a boulder with a sickening crunch.
"Over here! She's here!" another voice roared.
"Damn it," Eliana hissed. She bolted through the dense thicket, her boots tearing through the underbrush. Her lungs burned as the fog grew thicker, weaving between giant trunks. But no human—or mage—could outrun a shifter on their home ground.
A dark figure dropped from the canopy above, landing directly in her path with terrifying grace.
Eliana skidded to a halt, her heart dropping into her stomach.
Standing six paces ahead of her was High Alpha Kaelen Vane. He was towering, broad-shouldered, and draped in black furs over runic leather armor. Raven hair fell around a face carved from sharp, unforgiving angles. But it was his eyes—piercing, icy amber—that made Eliana's breath catch in her throat.
"Rogue Mage," Kaelen growled, his voice a gravelly, resonant purr that vibrated straight through her chest. He stepped forward, his gaze tracking the faint golden light pulsing beneath her skin. "You're far from your Spire."
"And you're far from your cage, wolf," Eliana spat, forcing her voice into a steady, lethal calm despite the adrenaline racing through her veins.
Kaelen’s lips curved into a dark, dangerous smirk. "Festy. I like when they fight."
Without warning, he moved with supernatural speed—a blur of shadow and raw muscle.
Eliana reacted instantly, raising both hands to summon a searing wall of elemental fire between them. The flames roared to life, illumination the dark woods in golden heat. But Kaelen didn't retreat. He leaped straight through the flame, his dark aura suppressing the heat just enough to burst through unscathed.
He slammed into her, his sheer weight driving them both to the muddy forest floor.
Eliana gasped as the air knocked out of her lungs. Before she could channel another spell, Kaelen pinned her wrists above her head with one massive, calloused hand. His heavy, muscular frame flattened her against the cold earth, trapping her completely beneath him.
"Got you," he rasped, his warm breath fanning across her lips, smelling of rain and winter frost.
"Get off me, beast!" Eliana wriggled violently, her thighs brushing against the dense hardness of his broad hips.
Kaelen’s eyes darkened, his nostrils flaring as he leaned down, hovering mere inches from her face. His gaze dragged over her flushed cheeks, her parted lips, and down to the pulse fluttering wildly in the dip of her collarbone.
"You smell like sun-warmed sky and ozone," Kaelen murmured, a sudden, confused tension stiffening his jaw. His golden eyes locked onto hers with strange intensity. "What are you?"
"Your death, if you don't release me!" Eliana gathered every drop of remaining magic, sending a sharp electrical shock from her palms directly into his grip.
Kaelen grunted in pain, but instead of releasing her, his fingers tightened. In the struggle, his collar shifted, and his bare wrist brushed against the exposed skin of her throat.
The moment skin met skin, the universe shattered.
A blinding explosion of golden light and obsidian shadow erupted from the point of contact. Eliana screamed as a wave of intense, searing heat surged through her blood, rushing straight to her heart. Beside her, Kaelen threw his head back, letting out a raw, guttural roar of agony and shock.
The air around them crackled with wild magic. Beneath the skin of her collarbone, a sharp, burning sensation carved itself into her flesh. She looked down through blurred vision to see a glowing mark appearing on her skin—a crescent moon entwined with a sunburst.
Across Kaelen’s throat, an identical glowing mark burned beneath his skin.
The ambient magic cleared, leaving behind a heavy, suffocating silence.
Kaelen hovered over her, his chest heaving, his dark hair falling across his forehead. His amber eyes were wide, blown out with shock, staring down at the glowing mark on her neck—and then into her eyes.
The mate pull slammed into them like a physical blow. A sudden, overwhelming surge of possessive desire and desperate physical need flooded the space between them. Eliana’s skin tingled everywhere his body touched hers, her heart pounding with a strange, terrifying ache that demanded he draw closer.
Kaelen reached down, his heavy, trembling fingers tracing the warm contour of her jawline. His touch was no longer that of a captor, but a male hypnotized by his female.
"No..." Eliana whispered, her voice trembling as horror and undeniable arousal warred in her chest. "No, this is impossible."
Kaelen’s thumb brushed her lower lip, his dark eyes burning with dangerous, possessive heat. "Fated," he growled low in his throat, his inner beast roaring with sudden, fierce obsession. "You are my mate."
