Chapter 1: The Quiet Girl
Lila had always felt invisible. At school, in the streets, even at home. She moved through life quietly, like a shadow that no one noticed. She preferred it that way. Being quiet kept her safe. But it also left her lonely.
It was a rainy Thursday when she first noticed him. Daniel. He wasn’t loud or flashy like the others. He had a calm presence, a quiet smile that seemed to understand things no one else did.
She caught him staring once, just for a moment, before he quickly looked away. Her heart had jumped, though she tried not to let it show. Who was he to make her feel seen in a world where she often felt invisible?
Days passed, and their paths crossed more often. On the bus, at the library, in the small corner café she liked. Little things caught her attention: the way he laughed softly at something she said, the small nods of recognition when their eyes met.
Then one afternoon, he spoke.
“Hey… I see you.”
The simplicity of it sent a flutter through her chest. She wanted to reply, to say something clever, something that would make him notice her even more. But all that came out was a shy nod.
“I’m Daniel,” he added, smiling.
“I’m Lila,” she whispered.
From that moment, something shifted. For the first time in a long time, she felt like maybe, just maybe, someone saw her—not just her quiet exterior, but the thoughts and feelings she tucked away.
And yet, deep inside, a tiny voice whispered a warning: People who light up your world can sometimes leave it dark too.
But Lila ignored it. For now, she wanted to believe in the warmth of a smile and the promise of something new.
