Lucien’s POV I was sitting at the polished dining table for breakfast, fully expecting to eat my meal in silence like usual. The dining room was always too large and too empty for just one person. I had my tablet propped up against the crystal sugar bowl, skimmed through early morning market reports, and casually sipped a cup of black coffee while waiting for my eggs to arrive. The silence of the house was suddenly shattered by the familiar sound of bare feet padding heavily against the floor. I looked up from the screen, and my heart did a sudden, unexpected skip.
