The night was cold as I walked away from Sky, her angry words echoing in my mind. I’d pushed her away, told her to back off when, deep down, I knew she’d only wanted to help. But I couldn’t let her get involved, not with the risks we were up against. Nyx’s low growl rumbled in my mind, a reminder of his own disapproval.
“You messed up, you know that?” Nyx muttered, his tone sharp with reprimand. “She’s stronger than you think, Noah. You didn’t need to push her away.”
I clenched my jaw, frustration tightening my chest. “I had to,” I replied inwardly, trying to ignore the knot of regret that wouldn’t leave me alone. “I can’t risk her getting involved in this mess. She’s not ready.”
Nyx huffed, his voice laced with sarcasm. “She’s not ready, or you’re not ready?”
