The university gossip forums were going crazy.

Kathy Lexing—the girl who punched her cheating ex and kissed his biggest rival in the same game, on the same rink, on the same night.

Some call her an attention seeker.

Others think she's a badass.

But now Wayne Xander, her ex-boyfriend's biggest rival, has a proposition: fake-date him just to get under her ex's skin.

She agrees—but only to get rid of the bad publicity.

There's only one rule, though:

Don't fall for the rival team's captain.

Chapter 1
[Kathy] The scoreboard read 2-1 in our favor—the biggest rivalry game of the season. But I was in a totally different head space. I still couldn't believe what Bree had told me in the ladies' room. Something had been off with Bree for days now. So I grabbed her wrist during the first intermission and hauled her toward the bathroom before she could argue. "What is your problem?!" "Talk," I said, back against the tampon dispenser. "Now." Her hands crossed under her bosoms, "I don't have anything to talk about." "C'mon Bree! You've been behaving so weird towards me these past few days and you know it. Did I do something—" "Urgh, you always have to make everything about you, don't you?" she interrupted. Her hand flipped her long brown locks over her shoulder. "What?" "Wake up Kathy." Green eyes glared at me, "The world doesn't revolve around you, you know." She has never given me that kind of look before, not even in our worse fight. "I don't understand where all this is coming from Bree. I just wanted to know what's wrong, as your best friend." I pointed out. She sighed. "Well, if you insist. Blair's been cheating on you." My stomach dropped. The bathroom door swung shut behind some girl who took one look at our faces, before she turned to one of the sinks. I ignored her, and went ahead to grab Bree's arm. "Urgh, let go—" "That's not funny, Bree." "Do you see me laughing?" she responded, then freed her arm from my grasp. I wanted to call her a liar. I wanted to walk out and pretend this conversation never happened. "With who?" The words felt so heavy. Bree stared right into my eyes. "Me." It hit like a slap I felt in my teeth. "What?" "Since when?" The question hung heavy in the air. I never suspected a thing. Bree, Blair, and I have been friends since I can remember. At first, it was just Blair and me, ever since we were kids, and he always saved me from my bullies. I started following him around like his minion. Then Bree came along during high school, and we became a trio—Joined at the hip, we were always together. It was only until freshman year that Blair and I started dating. He asked me out and I said yes, because I already had feelings for him. "For a while now," Bree replied, she moved closer to me. "I've always loved Blair, that was why I became friends with you both in the first place. I thought if I stayed close enough to both of you, eventually he'd notice me." "But you just had to get there first." she added. I froze. She moved few steps away from me, "But you shouldn't be too mad at me because guess what? He's cheating with a dozen others too. That's the only reason you're finding out from me." "Blair's a f*****g asshole—A total fuckboy. Been juggling girls since freshman year." I stared at her, "You're supposed to be my best friend." Her eyes studied her well polished nails, "Yeah right, please let's skip this whole 'how could you' charade. Now you know Kathy, and I'm actually doing you a favour here." My hands went cold. The person in front of me looked like a totally different person from the Bree I had known all these years. I couldn't even bear to take one more look at her. I pushed past her, past the girl who hovered by the sinks pretending not to listen, and out into the concourse where the crowd noise swallowed me whole. Everything just seemed to fade as I stared absentmindedly at the players on the rink. I wanted to wait till after the game to confront Blair, but in the next moment, I found myself heading onto the ice. I dashed past the security guy who tried to grab my arm, through the players' gate. I tried to sustain my balance multiple times as my boots slid on the ice. THUD—I hit the rink. The entire arena went silent. My eyes scanned the crowd. Embarrassment began to kick in. My boots had absolutely no business being on the ice. Blair skated toward me first, helmet already off, that easy grin sliding onto his face like he thought I'd come to cheer him on. "Babe, what are you doing? You can cheer for me after I win the game—" "Bree told me everything." I stood up. His grin didn't move. Didn't even flicker. It did something cruel to my chest. "Everything?" I could hear my pulse loudly in my ears. "Aren't you going to deny it?" My voice almost trembled as I tried to push back my tears. "You wanna do this here? Now?" I pushed him, the last strand of my cool finally disappearing in thin air. He didn't lose his balance. "You cheated on me. With Bree, our best friend! And a dozen others, apparently, and you're asking if I want to do this now?" Blair glanced past me at the stands, at all those eyes. "You're being dramatic Kathy! Trust me, you do not want to do this here." The word sent an arrow right through my ribcage. "I'm being dramatic?!" "Yes! You always do this. Blow things out of proportion. Go home Kathy, we'll talk once you're much calmer." The rink lights buzzed overhead. My whole body had gone hot and cold at the same time, like a fever breaking. He was about to skate away, but I grabbed his oversized jersey and my fist connected before I finished thinking about it. His head snapped sideways. Gasps rippled through the crowd like wind through grass. My knuckles throbbed, but nothing about the sting registered as pain. Blair touched his jaw, checked his fingers for blood, and laughed. He actually laughed. "We're done." I told him. "Sure we are." "I mean it. Done. For good." He scoffed, "Don't say things you don't mean, Kathy. You and I both know that you can't possibly live without me—You said it yourself." I huffed. Something detonated behind my ribs. I wasn't thinking about consequences. Or the cameras capturing everything. Or Monday morning, or any version of my life past the next ten seconds. I turned and looked for the one person guaranteed to make Blair's easy little smirk disappear. Wayne Xander. Captain and center of the rival hockey team. He just stood across, watching the whole drama unfold with the kind of focus most guys reserved for a tied third period. Our eyes locked. I didn't decide to move. My body just went, skates be damned, my boots kept attempting to humiliate me again but I continued slipping against ice until I crossed center rink, and reached him. His face held not even a single trace of confusion. He towered above me, hair raven-black, and electrifying blue eyes that never left me—they settled on me with a nonchalant look, like some part of him had already guessed exactly where this was headed the moment I started walking towards him. I grabbed the front of his jersey with both fists, and closed the distance between us. The whole arena rose out of their seats at once, a wall of noise crashing down around us, thousands of phones lifting into the air at the exact same second. But none of it reached me. Not really. Not with his face this close. Without giving it a second thought, I crashed my lips against his. And as if I regained my senses immediately my lips connected to his, I shut my eyes tightly. I'm probably going to regret this later. I was about to pull away, but Wayne's arms wrapped around my waist as he kissed me back. His cold, soft lips fit against mine far too perfectly. He finally let go of me slowly. His eyes caught mine and held them there. ***
