Chapter Twenty-Six
The door opens, and Mrs. Marsh appears on the threshold. “Stanley! I didn’t know you were…” Her gaze falls upon me and Piper. “What are you doing here?”
I keep my face blank, searching hers for any trace of guilt. If Alex is behind Chrissy’s kidnapping and Ingram’s murder, Mrs. Marsh may be part of it. It’s equally possible she’s oblivious to her boy-toy’s actions, but I’m not taking anything for granted. I don’t want to believe that she’d be okay with disposing of her only child to cover up an affair, but I know better than anyone how selfish mothers can be.
“It’s all right, Amanda, I asked them here,” says a voice that I recognize as the senator’s. “Show them in, please.”
