Chapter Twenty-Seven Piper and I spend most of the strange journey back to Hill O’ Beans in silence. Dr. Eberhardt drops us off right next to Piper’s car, gives us a perfunctory “Good luck,” then drives off. It’s not until we’re safely inside the Altima that we release our collective breath. I relate to her everything I remember from my one pass through the mystery girl’s memories. As she listens, she retrieves a discarded fast-food bag from the back seat, empties its contents, then sticks the warning note and the thumb drive inside. “So what now?” I ask. She fastens her seatbelt, starts the car, and backs out of her spot. “I’m dropping you off at your place, then I have to run home and see if Dad’s back from his physical therapy. If he’s not, I’ll come right back over with my yearbook
