The First Day
Chapter 1
The first day of school, and it's already so tiring. Classes start at 6:00 a.m., so I woke up at 5:00 a.m. to get ready.
Who even decided that classes should start this early? Seriously, do students not deserve enough sleep?
I quickly brushed my hair, grabbed my bag, and rushed out of the house without even eating breakfast.
Unfortunately, my morning couldn't have gotten any worse.
As I entered the classroom, I froze.
Everyone was already seated, and our teacher was standing in front of the board, discussing the lesson.
Oh, God.
I was late on the first day of school.
Great impression, Ann. Just great.
"Sir, may I come in?" I asked nervously, standing by the door.
The entire class turned to look at me.
I wanted the floor to swallow me whole.
Our teacher slowly turned around. "You're late on the first day of school?"
"I'm sorry, Sir. It won't happen again," I answered, lowering my head.
He sighed before gesturing toward the empty seats.
"Fine. Find a seat and try not to interrupt the discussion again."
"Thank you, Sir."
I hurried toward the back of the classroom and sat beside a girl who was busy writing something in her notebook.
"First day pa lang, late ka na agad," she whispered.
I turned toward her.
"Excuse me? At least I'm here."
She chuckled. "You're funny."
"And you're annoying."
"Nice to meet you, Annoying."
I rolled my eyes and faced the board.
Seriously, was this how my school year was going to start?
I pulled out my notebook and prepared to copy the lesson. Unfortunately, when I reached into my bag for a pen, I realized that I had forgotten one.
Perfect.
Just absolutely perfect.
"Looking for this?"
The girl beside me held out a black pen.
I stared at it before looking at her.
"How did you know?"
"You've been searching your bag like you're looking for lost treasure."
I took the pen from her hand.
"Thanks."
"You're welcome. By the way, I'm Natalie."
"Ann."
"Well, Ann, try not to be late tomorrow."
"Well, Natalie, try not to be annoying tomorrow."
She laughed quietly.
I shook my head and returned my attention to the board.
Then, for some reason, I found myself looking at our teacher.
And that was when I finally got a good look at him.
He was standing beside the whiteboard, holding a marker in one hand while explaining the lesson. He looked young, perhaps in his late twenties, with neatly styled dark hair, sharp features, and a serious expression that somehow made him look even more intimidating.
He wore a simple long-sleeved shirt with the sleeves folded neatly to his elbows.
Nothing about him was particularly extraordinary.
At least, that was what I told myself.
Until he turned around.
"Miss at the back."
My head immediately snapped up.
"Y-Yes, Sir?"
His eyes met mine.
"Would you mind telling the class what I just explained?"
My heart nearly stopped.
Oh, no.
No, no, no.
I hadn't been listening.
I had been staring at him!
"I... I'm sorry, Sir. Could you repeat the question?"
A few students laughed.
He raised an eyebrow.
"Perhaps you should pay more attention instead of looking around the classroom."
My cheeks burned.
"Yes, Sir. I'm sorry."
He returned to the board without another word.
I buried my face in my notebook.
That was embarrassing.
And the worst part?
I didn't even know his name yet.
When the bell finally rang, I immediately packed my things.
I needed to get out of that classroom before I embarrassed myself again.
"Hey, Ann!"
I turned around and saw Natalie walking toward me, holding her phone.
"What now?" I asked impatiently.
She grinned.
"Looks like we're classmates for the entire semester."
I frowned. "Obviously. We literally just met."
"No, genius. I mean we're in the same section, and we're going to have most of our classes together."
I sighed dramatically.
"Great. Just what I needed."
She playfully hit my arm.
"You're so mean!"
"You're so annoying!"
We laughed as we walked toward the classroom door.
But before I could step outside, a voice stopped us.
"Miss Ann."
I froze.
That voice.
Slowly, I turned around.
Our teacher was standing behind his desk, looking directly at me.
"Yes, Sir?"
"Stay for a moment. I need to discuss something with you."
Natalie immediately raised her eyebrows at me.
I mouthed, Help me.
She only grinned.
"Good luck!" she whispered before disappearing into the hallway.
Traitor.
I slowly approached the teacher's desk, clutching the strap of my bag.
"Is there a problem, Sir?"
He set down the papers he was holding.
"You're a new student, correct?"
"Yes, Sir."
"And you arrived late on your very first day."
I winced.
"Yes, Sir. I'm sorry."
He studied me for a moment before speaking.
"Let's make sure it doesn't become a habit. Being late affects not only your performance but also the class."
"I understand, Sir. It won't happen again."
He nodded.
"Good. I'm Ethan Reyes, your subject teacher. I expect you to take this class seriously."
Ethan Reyes.
For some reason, his name stayed in my head.
"Understood, Sir."
"You're dismissed, Ann."
I turned to leave.
"Miss Ann?"
I looked back.
"Yes, Sir?"
"Your notebook."
I glanced down and realized that I had left it on the desk.
My face heated up.
"Oh! Thank you, Sir!"
I hurriedly grabbed it and practically ran out of the classroom.
The moment I reached the hallway, I leaned against the wall and covered my face with both hands.
What was wrong with me?
It was just a teacher.
A handsome teacher, yes.
But still, a teacher.
And I had absolutely no reason to think about him again.
Absolutely none.
"ANN!"
I jumped when Natalie suddenly appeared in front of me.
"What?!"
She stared at me suspiciously.
"Why is your face red?"
"It's not!"
"Really? Because you look like you've just seen the most handsome man in the world."
I immediately looked away.
"You're imagining things."
Natalie gasped dramatically.
"WAIT. Don't tell me—"
"Don't even finish that sentence."
"YOU LIKE OUR TEACHER?!"
"SHUT UP!"
She burst out laughing, attracting the attention of a few students passing by.
I covered her mouth with my hand.
"Are you crazy?! He's our teacher!"
She pulled my hand away, still laughing.
"I didn't say anything!"
"You literally just screamed it!"
"Okay, okay! I'll stop."
She paused for a second before giving me a mischievous smile.
"But seriously, Ann..."
I narrowed my eyes.
"What?"
She leaned closer and whispered, "Sir Ethan is really handsome."
I stared at her.
Then, despite myself, I laughed.
"You're so stupid."
"Maybe. But at least I'm not the one blushing over a teacher."
I shoved her shoulder playfully.
"Let's go!"
We walked down the hallway, laughing like nothing had happened.
But even as I tried to focus on our conversation, one thought kept returning to my mind.
Ethan Reyes.
My teacher.
The man who had already embarrassed me on the first day of school.
I shook my head, trying to forget his face.
After all, it was only the first day.
What could possibly happen?
Little did I know that meeting him would eventually change the way I understood love, heartbreak, and the difference between wanting someone and being ready for them.
And by the time I finally understood my feelings, things would no longer be as simple as they seemed.
