Griselda and Martha were both forest witches. As young children, they played together. Their families knew each other, and all came from the same village. Martha, however, was fortunate enough to be taken in by a coven led by Madame Anna. It was like a large family, living in quaint little caves in the woods, in a place called the Hole.
The Hole was a place that Erishkigal and other supernatural and human entities could not detect.
It was a haven.
It was like a black hole, except you did not get destroyed in it. Instead, you were protected from becoming destroyed.
