Driving Carolina to school was a strange experience. I felt a vague sense of pride at her passing her entrance exam and interview. She was so intelligent and outspoken that the school admissions had no choice but to give her a chance. When she started speaking in French and Spanish, everyone was convinced that she was merely unfortunate enough to lose her records. The head interviewer’s eyes had watered when Caro started talking about how she lost her family and all her certificates to a fire. At least, that was what she told me.
