Daniel Xavier asked me for something that tied me to Carolina, something of hers. Something of value. I fumbled for the ring in my pocket. I placed it on Xavier’s open palm. His eyes seemed to have softened when he saw the gold jewelry. “You really love her, don’t you?” he asked, looking at me with a sense of wonder. “It was not the right ring, Xavier. This one is just a promise. I should have given her a different kind of ring, one for a stronger kind of commitment,” I said, smiling bitterly. “You will still get a chance, Daniel. We will get to her. At this point, nothing seemed impossible. Have you ever had that feeling?” I nodded my agreement. “You need to prepare for this. At least a few days of rest and meditation.” That did not sit well with me. I had to find Carolina now.
