Elena did not sleep much that night. The lights at the gala the eyes that were staring at her and the weird smile of the man who was hiding in the shadows were all, in her dreams. Elena felt like everyone could see her she felt weak but at the time Elena knew that she had to pay attention change the way she did things and do what Elias told her to do if Elena wanted to be okay.
There was a knock on her door. This little sound pulled her away from her thoughts. She had been thinking about a lot of things and her mind was over the place. The soft knock on her door was a distraction, from her restless thoughts.
“Breakfast is ready Ms. Moore “ the assistant said in a voice. “Mr. Blackwood is expecting you soon for your morning schedule so you should probably get going. Mr. Blackwood wants to see you “
Elena nodded to herself holding the silk robe tightly around her shoulders. The apartment was really quiet it was almost scary. The shadows, on the wall looked long and spooky. Elena felt like someone was watching her the feeling would not go away. She felt like someone was watching Elena, which made her feel very uncomfortable.
Elias was already sitting in the dining area. The room felt different when Elias was in it even before he said a word. Elias is a man and he always seems to be perfectly put together. When Elias looked at her his eyes were, like steel, a color that really stood out and they seemed to see right through her.
Morning Ms. Moore he said to her. He wanted to know if Ms. Moore had a night of sleep. Did Ms. Moore rest well he asked her.
She said I tried her voice was shaking bad.
“Good.” He pointed to the chair. “Today we are going to keep learning about etiquette and poise and social strategy. You will also get to meet someone who’s very important. Etiquette is a part of what we do. We need to work on your strategy too.. Then you will meet this important person. I think you will like them. Etiquette lessons are very useful.
Elena’s heart felt really bad. She had to take another test. It was another situation, for Elena.
The afternoon was about learning the proper way of doing things: like how to hold a glass, how to talk to people with elegance how to stand and walk and sit like the people in this world. Every time Elias corrected the woman it felt like he was scolding her and teaching her at the time reminding her that her place in this world was not very strong. The woman had to learn how to do everything right because Elias was always watching her and the woman had to remember that she was still learning about this world and the people, in it like Elias.
Then the moment finally arrived. There was a knock at the door. A man walked in. This man was someone in her life. He had eyes and a sharp smile. He seemed confident a lot like Elias but there was something cold, about him that you could sense.
Mr. Blackwood, Elena Elias said. This is Adrian Wolfe. He is the man who will be dealing with our partners. We need to watch what Adrian Wolfe does closely. Adrian Wolfe is going to be a part of these negotiations.
Elena’s stomach turned. The man looked at her for a bit long. It was like he was trying to figure something out. He was being really creepy. Elena felt really small and weak like an animal that the man was getting ready to pounce on. The mans stare made Elena feel like she was, in danger. Elena was scared of the man and his scary gaze.
Elias’s hand touched hers softly as he moved in close. He whispered something that only she could hear. He said "Do not pay attention to him. Do not show anything. The way to be strong is to be in control of yourself not to let your feelings take over.” Elias wanted her to remember that her strength was, in being able to control herself not in what she felt. Elias was telling her to stay calm and not let her emotions get the best of her.
The woman said “Yes Mr. Blackwood” in a voice and she nodded her head.
Adrian held out his hand to her. He said “I hear you are learning fast”. He spoke really smoothly. His voice was very nice. “I will be watching you closely” he said. “Do not disappoint me” Adrian told her.
Elena made herself smile. For a moment her fingers touched his. That was all it took for her to feel a chill. There is something, about him that does not feel right. Elena thinks that he seems like a person and that is what is really bothering her. Why does Elena get the feeling that he’s dangerous?
Elias’s eyes met hers from all the way across the room. They were calm and commanding never looking away. She took a breath and told herself: I can get by with Elias in charge. No that is not what she meant. She can get by with Elias.
The rest of the afternoon was a blur. There were instructions and corrections and little tests from both Adrian and Elias. Adrian did not take his eyes off her. He made jokes that sounded like compliments. Elias watched her too. His eyes helped her get through every conversation, with Adrian and Elias. Adrian and Elias were always paying attention to her.
By the time the day was over Elena’s body hurt over her nerves were really strained but even though she was extremely tired she had started to feel something else. Elena was getting better at dealing with things she was changing the way she did things. Elena was making it through each day.
As Elias walked with her to the car he said to her in a voice "Tonight you need to rest. Tomorrow the challenges with the world watching will get even tougher. The world is watching Elias said and you must be ready for the challenges tomorrow. Elias wanted her to understand that the world is waiting for her to be ready, for the challenges.
The woman said "yes" to Mr. Blackwood in a quiet voice.
Elena was by herself in her room later. Her fingers were shaking really badly as she held onto the silk sheets. She was still very scared. She felt a little braver now. The fear was still there. Elena felt more determined than before and that feeling was getting stronger in her. Elena thought about what she had to do. The determination was growing it was all, about Elena and what Elena wanted to do.
I will endure. I will survive. Nobody is going to control the life of music not any man, not any enemy, not any circumstance music will always be free. The music will endure the music will survive and the music will not be controlled by anyone or anything the music is strong.
Even in the shadows of danger, she felt the tiniest flicker of power, and it terrified—and exhilarated—her all at once.
