CHAPTER 1- The price of Fate
Elena Moores hands were shaking really badly as she looked at the letter. The words were all fuzzy. She knew exactly what it was saying: I really need to pay the debts right now. The amount of money that I owe is one million two hundred thousand dollars. This is a lot of money and the payment, for the debts is due today. I have to pay the debts today. One million two hundred thousand dollars is a lot of money. The woman did not even have one thousand dollars. This number was really scary. It seemed impossible. Her heart was beating fast as she felt panic all over her chest. The thought of one million two hundred thousand dollars was really overwhelming, for the woman. Her stepmothers voice came down the hall. It was cold and sharp. "Elena are you crying again?" Elena said quietly that she did not know what to do. Catherine Moore seemed calm and distant. She put a glass of wine down on the table. Catherine Moore said "I am, in charge of all the money. I get to decide how money you are allowed to use." Elena sank into the chair. This was not about the money it was about who had control over her life. Elena's life and Elena's choices and Elena's survival were all, in someone elses hands. Her eyes landed on an envelope that was sealed with black wax. The letters B and E were mixed together. That made her fingers shake as she opened the envelope from the people at B and E. Ms. Elena Moore, the offer is still available. If you get married to Mr. Elias Blackwood with a marriage contract it can help you pay off your debts and make sure your future is okay. This marriage contract, with Mr. Elias Blackwood is a way to take care of your money problems and have a life. Her breath caught in her throat. The thought of marriage was scary. It was like a contract that she could not get out of. Elias Blackwood was a man who was really mean and scary. Nobody wanted to cross him. He was feared by everyone in the city. Now he was the one who could help her. Her stomach was twisting into knots. The idea of being tied to Elias Blackwood was making her feel sick. Marriage, to him was a deal. Elias Blackwood was her hope now. She said this is not real they have to be joking this cannot be true she whispered to herself that they are not serious, about this thing this situation is not real it is a big joke she thought to herself they have to be kidding. Catherine has a calm voice. It helped to cut through the fear that she was feeling. Catherine said "You have twenty-four hours to make a decision. If you fail then your life, with Catherine will be over." Her fathers face came to mind. The man who told her she could do anything. Would her father even know the girl she had become? The girl she had become was really scared. Felt trapped. Her father had always been a part of her life and now she wondered if he would even recognize the girl she had become. My phone is buzzing again. It is another creditor. They are going to take her apartment. The only choice that remains is Elias Blackwood. Her hands were shaking really badly as she picked up the phone. Dialed the number. "Hello?" a deep voice said. It was a voice that sounded like it was used to being, in charge. The woman said "I am calling about the marriage contract" in a quiet voice. She could hardly speak louder, than a whisper when she said the marriage contract. The marriage contract was what she was calling about. "Ms. Moore " he said, his voice was cold and very exact. "I was waiting for your call. You do not have a choice Ms. Moore. Your debts and your life they are mine to take care of once you agree to this Ms. Moore. You need to understand this. She said I understand in a quiet voice. I want you to be at my office tomorrow morning. You have to be on time. I do not like it when people are late. I expect you to be at my office tomorrow morning. You have to be there when you are supposed to be. I do not tolerate people being late to my office. You should be at my office tomorrow morning. My office is where I want to see you tomorrow morning. Tomorrow morning is when I want you to be, at my office. Elena was all by herself. She felt like a puppet. Someone she could not see was pulling the strings that controlled her. Fear took hold of Elena. Then she heard a small voice, inside her. This small voice whispered to Elena: I will survive this thing that is happening to Elena. Elena felt a little better when she heard the small voice talking to her. The small voice kept telling Elena that Elena would get through this time. The morning she was in that big shiny building, with steel and glass everywhere. She sat in the lounge waiting. Then Elias walked in. He was really tall. Had big shoulders. His eyes looked like steel. When she saw Elias her heart started beating fast. Elias was an impressive man and she could not help but notice him. Elias had this way of making her feel nervous. She did not know what to do when he was around. He told me that he will take care of my debts. I have to do what people expect me to do. If I do not do that something bad will happen to me. He asked me if I understood what he was saying about my debts and the expectations. I have to live up to those expectations. I will face consequences for my debts. The woman said yes quietly. The man told me that my training is starting now. He said I have to follow the rules about what I wear how I behave and how I act in public. I have to do what the rules say. The training rules for my behavior and dress code and how I am supposed to conduct myself in public are very important. I will obey the rules for my dress and my behavior and my public conduct. There are no exceptions, to the rules. That evening the limousine took her to his penthouse apartment. It was really big and fancy. Every single thing in the apartment showed that he liked to be, in control. There were these silk gowns hanging on a rack and they looked amazing but they also scared her. The silk gowns were so fancy that it was a little terrifying to see them just hanging there waiting for her to try them on. He asked if we really get why these choices are so important. These choices matter because they can affect us in ways. He wanted to know if we understand why these choices matter. "Yes " she whispered. At this point survival was what mattered to her not what she actually wanted. Survival was her concern now. Her legs shook, but deep inside, determination sparked. I will survive. I will endure. I will reclaim my life.
