Chapter 2- Thoughts.
“Ah…! Sapphire woke up screaming. She felt like she just had a nightmare, panting and shaking. She slowly inhaled and exhaled repeatedly. Looking outside the window to see it wasn’t morning yet. She fell back on her bed and slowly glanced around the dark room. The only light source came from the window, which was left open and hunged by the left. She exhaled loudly again and closed her eyes to sleep.
“Wait?! She snapped awake again as she realized she was changed and in her nightwear. She kept staring other than admiring the wear. She wondered that someone must have changed her while she slept. Was it the maid or her husband. She shrieked as she felt as a wife she would be up to wait for her husband’s arrival. She felt bad for herself but paused when she heard the floorboard creak, it meant some one was up and moving from upstairs to downstairs.
She sighed and slowly laid down on the bed again, itched her head and realized her cloth was off her head and well folded, on the desk. Closing those beautiful blue eyes and laying still, she heard the floorboard creak again and felt the individual was climbing up the stairs again. She ignored every last of it, until she felt the candle in her room lit and the room get chilly.
She scrambled up in fear but no one was in the room, she turned around slowly but saw no one. She felt the cold shuddering breath on her neck and heard a woman cry out in a whisper.
“Help me”.
“Who was that? Sapphire shrieked in fear, already overwhelmed by it. She pulled her legs up and rode the bed spread over to her nose. Looking cautiously at everything that gave the image of a person. There was no one, no one at all. She sighed in relief and lowered the blanket immediately. Suddenly she saw it, a woman in a red gown, slim and slender looking, enveloped by fear as she scurries to an already scared Sapphire, with heist and screams the word in her eyes.
“RUN!
“Ah….! Sapphire screams and springs to wake again. Breathing heavily and clinging unto her beating chest. She was trying to calm down, when she heard some one open the window in her room.
“Good morning mi lady. Bad dream? She asked smiling at her.
“Sonia? It’s morning”. She mumbled as she kept blinking her eyes in shock.
“Indeed. It was cold last night, I had to come in and shut your window. Hope you didn’t mind? Sonia said and made advances to the side of her bed.
“Not…not at all”. Sapphire said, still not sure of last night’s events. She avoids Sonia’s gaze and seems not to be in the right moment for a chat. She holds her head, smooching it with her fingers as it ached her a bit.
“Medicine? Sonia asked as she pulled it from underneath her white apron. She was already dressed in her black short gown, white apron in front, and black flat shoes. Sapphire looks at her strangely but doesn’t accept it. Pretending to be fine and asking Sonia to leave the room for a second.
Sonia steps out and waits by the door for her. After a while, she goes back in, on the command of Sapphire. Sapphire wishes for her to relive her entrance of last night’s event, from the moment she came down the carriage to clear her mind.
Sonia in an odd look, narrates the story. That she got here looking excited and happy, her bags were dropped in by the rider and she took her for a tour. Later she came in here for a short nap, which pretty much lasted till this morning.
“Really? Thought I heard you say something about…”.
“About what exactly…? She asked with a long face.
“Uhm…Never mind. I would like a bath now please”. Sapphire replies, giving off any attempts to remember anything.
“Already prepared. I must inform you the master is quite a late show. He is currently out of town but will arrive least tomorrow. He wishes to express his delight in meeting you and ready to get the wedding off immediately”. Sonia said, hands behind her back.
“Oh…Okay”. Sapphire replies, looking baffled.
After the bath, Sapphire is left in the huge living room downstairs, she is seated in one of the chairs and is cautiously staring at the fireplace, admiring it’s craftsmanship.
“Why stare, when you could earn. A marriage to the master has granted access to everything”. Sonia said as she stepped forward. She had a change of dress, to just a black gown. She was going to the market to get some vegetables for dinner. She told Sapphire that her breakfast was already cold in the dining room.
“Oh thanks”. Sapphire muttered a reply. She watched Sonia as she made her way to the main door. Admiring her glowing light skin, silver braid hair, red lips and her dark eyes, that look seductive or maybe even scary. Her aura was a mixture of black and white and she had a warm smile. Sapphire mistook her for his mistress, her beauty was actually questioning.
Sapphire sat quietly as she saw the maid wander off. She was the only cook for the house, cleaner and everything. Yes! Guards and watch dogs were out in the yard, but without a butler the house felt bored. Is this what see suffers? Being alone when the master leaves the house? She didn’t want to bored herself with questions and made her way to the dinning table.
Munching on her bread and taking a sip of the tea. It was creamy and tastes delicious. She bit the bread, which was preoccupied with a fried egg in-between. Licking her lips, the food was tasty. She wondered what her little sister had for breakfast. What the family was doing? They would be in the farm yard by now. She cracked up a chuckle. They would be working hard on grandpa’s tomatoes and would have to wake up earlier.
She paused, pushing the empty plates aside as she thought to herself. She let out another chuckle as she remembered how her mother complained of her lazy in the farm yard. She remembered her school mates, the games they played or the day they messed with Akin’s greyhound. It was all Shelia’s idea, to snack in an get our ball. They jumped the fence and encountered the big bad dog, who launched itself at them.
She made her way to the kitchen, carefully placing her plate in the sink and letting the tap run to wash it. She applied some liquid soap and started washing the dishes. She was interrupted by a tap on the door. She paused, listening carefully, and hears the soft knock again. Pulling away from the sink and into the palor, she slowly makes her way to the door.
“Mi lady. It’s Victor”. A voice said and she recognized the name. Pulling her long cloth over her head to cover her face and slowly, she opened the door to see him, with a big smile on his face.
“Victor? How may I help you? She muttered. He stopped smiling and pulled out an envelope from his breast pocket, handing it to her.
“This came in early today. It’s about the wedding”. Victor said. She took it gently and glared at it.
“Lord Belmont weds Sapphire. On Sunday the 13th. Wait…this Sunday”. Sapphire gasped as she was never informed of the wedding being on Sunday. She knew Sunday was just tomorrow and had barely planned or even seen the master.
“Sonia didn’t tell you. I thought I should show you the invitation card before mailing it out. I mean, the lord is not a fan or large crowd but it’s all worth it though. I guess that’s why happens when you are a Belmont, everyone wants to get a bite of that sweet cherry cake”
“Huh? Sapphire gasped as she barely understood him. He realized his being standing for long and staggers backward. Waving his hands to explain his innocent while muttering the words…
“sorry…I didn’t realize I was talking too much. I’ll leave now, thank you”. Victor said and turned, marching down the pavement steps.
She shut the door and sink into the fluffy couch, trying to hold herself together. She hasn’t seen the master and already have a date for her wedding, but he travelled out or would he be back before that. She gambled with her thoughts and wandered why so. The date was too close and felt like a pressure to her. She sucked her teeth and pondered over her make up kits and dress for the wedding. All these were meant to be gotten in a shopping spree with her dear husband to be, but instead she would be, perhaps on her own for this.
“He isn’t a good man, is he? She muttered and shut her eyes. Feeling her entire body weaken as she felt her husband was a rather clumsy and perhaps unable to plan a date well. Maybe he is a shy type, like Darren from school. A cute boy with rich noble parents, but extremely shy around girls. Obviously he had a few heads turn his way, but he was so shy, that he felt everyone was crushing on him.
“Such a loser”. She muttered to herself again and sick deeper in the couch. She gnashed and looked at the flower pot that stood on the center table. Perhaps he had it all planned out, his trip to wherever, my arrival and everything. But this isn’t how she thought it would be, de expected a crowd yes, but a few days off with him would be nice. He seemed like the type, who would prioritize work over family.
“Are you alright, mi lady? Sonia asked and spooked her with her small voice.
“When did you…How? She snapped in fear and heard Sonia chuckle.
“You were so deep in thoughts that you didn’t know when I stepped in”. Sonia chuckled, holding some bags in her hand
“The market? Sapphire asked panting a bit.
“is not so far away…just a stone throw if you will”. Sonia replied with a smile.
“Yeah…I heard the wedding is tomorrow. The master isn’t back yet, so why fix it”. Sapphire asked in a bit of a demanding voice. Sonia’s expression changed and she erased the smile off her face.
“The wedding is tomorrow? She asked pretending dumb for a second.
“Yes! Sapphire slammed.
“Guess…he was right after all.
“Rigut about what?
“Right to get you some clothes, jewelries and rings ahead of the wedding”.
“What? When did he do that?
“Before you arrived and before he travelled. You see, he is quite the futuristic planner and has his timing to a perfection. Come mi lady, I’ll show you where he dropped the dresses”. Sonia says scurrying off immediately with Sapphire left begging for clarity. Guess she might have underestimated him on this one, but they could be more.
In the cold town of Sussex, England. The town was met with a light shower and rumbling of thunder in the clouds. There was a flashes of lightning in the night sky, the street was flooded with people in carriages and umbrellas, trying to make it home or getting into a café for a hot beverage.
There was a factory just north of the church tower. A timber factory, they were working hard, pushing and pull at wood. Standing in the rain was a man in a long black jacket, a walking stick in both palms which he drew to his back. He took a bit if a funny stance in front of the factory house. The foreman was yelling at the workers to not stop admits the rain. The strange man had a crispy hat over his head and a mischievous smile on his face. He stood fat from the light and barely took his eyes off the factory men.
“My Lord…you shouldn’t go standing in the rain like that. You could catch a cold sir”. A butler said and threw an umbrella over his head to shield him from the rain.
“How sweet that you care…”. The man muttered without even bringing himself to look at him. He shifts his gaze finally from the factory and pushes his away from the umbrella. “Meet me at the next street…I have to make a call first”. He said as he walks off into a dark alley way.
The butler stares at him in awe but decides to respect the wishes of his master. Running to get the carriage and ride it to the next street. Exposing his golden seal symbol of his jacket and walking stick, with the little flash of light. He stood in the middle of the alley way, cautiously looking around as though he plotted evil. No one was in sight and he let out a sigh.
Suddenly, everything froze, the rain drop slowed down the air, so slow that you could see it and catch it. He noticed this and cracked a feint smile. Lifting his head and not even looking behind him, he knew he wasn’t alone in the alley way. Some one was there with him, feeling the ominous presence and hearing the foreboding sound in his pierced ears. He smirked and scoffed out the name.
“Abyzou…? What a pleasant surprise or should I just say…good to see you again, Sonia”. He muttered and shifted his gaze behind him. There she was, kneeling down in the dark and in the cold. She had a knee down and the other up, left palm to the ground and right, just above the shoulder. Her eyes were dark and cold, just like her master. She was still in her maiden dress and slowly raised her eyes to him. Muttering in a cold emotionless voice.
“Good to see you too, Lord Belmont”.
