After her father left with his brother to do their jobs, Vanessa took Lilly to see Francis. When Vanessa told Francis of the dream and showed her the mark on Lilly's leg. It was clear on her face that Francis was unsettled.
“Ruby had a dream last night as well, she swore it was a memory. She was from Russia; she had taken a girl in that had lost her family. After raising the girl, she found out that the girl had had previous lives. When the girl turned twenty-one, she died. Ruby says she was given a gift of being reborn because the girl would need her help in her new life. She said her name was Natalia and the girls name was Katya. She swore that it was real and I believe her.” Francis says.
Lilly shook her head, “But my name was Bastet before, I don't remember it being Katya.”
Ruby spoke from the doorway, “That's because you don’t have all the memories of your lives back, just one. Last time you got your memories back the grief and pain of all your lives took a toll on you. So, the Goddess was kind and you’ll get another memory in a year, until all your memories have returned. At least that is what I have been told to tell you.”
Lilly was confused, this was only the first memory out of how many? Before she could ask, Vanessa was the one to take the initiative, “How many times has she died?”
Ruby answered, although she was unsure how she knew the answers she knew she spoke the truth. “She has died four times, all of them harsh and brutal.”
Vanessa then asks the most important question, “How long before it happens again?”
Lilly already knew and she answered before Ruby could, “On my twenty-first birthday, that’s when I always die. The first death was bad, the poison was excruciating. I’m afraid to know what my other deaths were like.”
Vanessa hugged her daughter, “We will do everything in our power to prevent this.”
Lilly smiled; she didn’t have the heart to tell her mother that nothing could change it. She hadn’t regained all her memories but she did know this would be her last and final death and then she would be born for the last time. After that day Vanessa, Ruby and Francis all buried themselves in old spell books to try and find a way to keep Lilly from dying.
While they looked Lilly did her best to continue learning how to keep her powers under control. Lilly was a fast learner but her powers were growing quicker, far quicker than expected. It was as if her powers knew her time was limited. After months and months, she was finally able to manipulate and control all the powers that she knew of.
Lilly knew none of it would save her, she was destined to die once more. Vanessa kept thinking she would find a solution, but as more time passed, she realized that perhaps fate had other plans for her daughter. When the time came, she would be willing to make the ultimate sacrifice to keep her daughter safe.
Lilly was about to turn another year older; she was about to be twelve, it was no surprise to Vanessa when Lilly once again woke up screaming on the night of her birthday. Lilly had gotten another memory back, and all the pain from her death. She told her mother everything even the horrible death of dying from the black plague. Vanessa was horrified and was afraid to imagine what the next year and memory would bring...
A year later another memory came, this death more painful and horrible than the last, and Lilly began to understand why she didn’t remember everything all at once. The year gave her the time she needed to heal, emotionally and mentally...
Another year passed, she was fourteen now and her last memory came, her death though it was peaceful, simply falling asleep in death. Once her memory returned it was only a matter of time before Lilly started to look for clues as to how her last and final life would be like.
Vanessa, Francis, and Ruby did their best to hide their worries and fears, when Lilly turned sixteen that's when the real trouble began...
