Love at first sight
A chance encounter on a sweltering Lusaka street leads to an instant connection between Nalini and a stranger. As they explore the city together, their connection deepens, and they realize they've found something special.
It was a sheltering day in Lusaka, the kind where the sun decides to hang low and bright over the city like it's trying to get everyone's attention. Nalini had just stepped out of her small café on Great East Road, needing a break from the heat and the constant buzz of customers. She leaned against a lampstand, frowing at the traffic, when she saw him.
He was walking towards her, eyes fixed on something in his phone, a slight smile playing on his lips. Maybe it was the way the sunlight danced off his hair, or how his white shirt seemed to glow against his dark skin, but Nalini felt something shift inside her. Like the city around her paused.
As he passed by, their eyes met. Just for a second. But it was like time decided to rewind. He looked up, started, and their gazes locked. Nalini felt her breath hitch.
The stranger slowed, confused, then smiled like he felt it too.
He stopped in front of her. "Hi," he said, like it was the only word he could muster.
Nalini laughed, heat rising to her cheeks "Hi".
Turns out he was new in town, looking for a good spot to grab lunch. Nalini pointed him to a food truck nearby. They walked together, talking like they'd known each other forever - music, books, they way Lusaka nights smell like rain.
As they stood by the truck, waiting for food, he turned to her and said, "I didn't expect this. But I don't want it to end."
Nalini smiled. "Me neither."
He took her hand then, like it was the most natural thing. And in that moment, under the beating sun, they both knew : this was it.
They grabbed their food and walked to a shady spot by the river. The Zambezi breeze was a welcome relief. They talked some more, laughed at silly things, and by the time the food was gone, Nalini knew she wanted to see him again. Tomorrow. And the day after.
As if reading her mind, he said, "want to show me around Lusaka tomorrow? I feel like I've got a local now."
Nalini grinned. "I'd love to."
They parted ways with a promise to meet at the museum at 10 Am. As she watched him disappear into the crowd, Nalini felt like she was floating.
Next day, walked through the botanical gardens, talking about his music he played guitar in a local band. She told him about her café, how she wanted to expand it into a community space.
They days turned into weeks. They went on night drives to the falls, had midnight coffee at the café, and danced in the rain at a random street party. Every moment felt like magic
Once evening, as they sat on a hill overlooking the city, he turned to her and said, "I come here looking for a fresh start. Didn't expect to find the start of everything."
Nalini's heart skipped. "what do you mean?"
He looked at her, eyes serious now. "I mean you. I want this, Nalini. Us."
She smiled, tears prising in her eyes. "Me too".
They kissed under the stars, with Lusaka glittering below a city that h
