34Vince quickly dropped Deefer at home, pulled on his tracksuit, then headed to Emu’s place in the town’s east opposite the racetrack. There were a couple of vehicles out front, including Elena’s work car, so Vince parked in front of the neighbour’s house, walked quickly up the drive and knocked loudly. Elena opened the door and motioned him back out again.
‘What’s the story, Sarge?’
‘I was in the shower when I got a frantic call from Aaron’s mum.’
‘Why does she have your number?’
She smiled ruefully. ‘I gave it to Aaron after Polly died, but now the whole family regard me as their personal copper. Anyway, I got dressed and came straight around—Aaron is saying nothing, but maybe he’ll speak to you.’
