Maya turned to find Jess jogging toward her across the sand, her white dress catching the moonlight.
"What are you doing out here by yourself?" Jess asked, slightly breathless. "Everyone's wondering where you went."
"Just needed a minute." Maya looked back at the dark water. "Connor didn't pick up. I called twice."
