Chapter 23
A NEW START?
Upstairs, Maya stood in the shower, letting hot water wash away the sand and the salt and the remnants of last night. She felt hollowed out, exhausted in a way that had nothing to do with lack of sleep.
Connor hadn't called back. Ethan had brought Vanessa. She'd spent Christmas night passed out on a beach.
This was not how she'd imagined the holidays going.
Through the wall, she could hear Jess singing off-key in the shower next door, and despite everything, Maya smiled.
At least she had her best friend. At least she had that.
She dried off, changed into comfortable clothes, and headed downstairs where the smell of bacon and eggs was already filling the house.
Time to face the day after Christmas.
Whatever that might bring.
Breakfast was quiet.
