Chapter 39

1280 Words

CHAPTER THIRTY-NINE Franklin said, ‘Stay there,’ exiting the unmarked. Howell gave him an unreadable look, then pulled out his notepad and phone. Maybe not happy about being excluded, but not going to push it. As he neared the house, Franklin could’ve sworn Irvy called out, Hold on, mate – got a crappy nappy to change, haven’t I, Mr Monster? His mind’s eye saw Irvy give a dramatic growl before he scooped little Levi under an arm and carried him horizontally. The toddler was giggling his head off and his dad doing a running commentary of toilet humour. In truth, his boots slapping the damp pathway was all he could hear today. No music or TV. No kids laughing or bickering. No Irvy and Kendra yelling or making up. No toys on the front lawn or other giveaways of the lovingly feisty family
