CHAPTER FORTY-ONE Jeanette gradually opened up during the interview. Her passions were farming and her late husband. On those topics, especially whenever she reminisced about the early days with Allan, her features lightened, and the nervous tick stopped. She even offered coffee. At one stage, she sobbed and laughed at the same time. Her age rewound by a decade in front of Georgie. When the subject came around to Allan’s sons and even the Gettys, Jeanette’s posture closed in and her answers reverted to minimal words, often monosyllables. Allan’s death and the time around it was naturally difficult for her to talk about. Georgie readied herself for the woman breaking down. But instead, Jeanette’s shoulders came back, squared, and her brow bunched while her pupils contracted to pinpoints.
