White lines appeared in my closed eyes as I tried to force myself to breathe. Liam's grip was like an icy tourniquet around my throat, and I felt the cold December air seeping in through the back door.
With what little strength I had left, I reached out and grabbed his arm, wanting to pry his hands open and pull him away from my neck. But as soon as my hand touched his wrist, he growled and unleashed all his anger on my face.
“Let me go... I can't... I can't breathe...” I said in a panic.
Even though he was my mate, it was clear that he no longer cared about my pain. However, as I thought about that, his harsh voice rang out again.
“You're right, I don't care what kind of scum f****d you... But... you'd better accept my proposal and get used to opening your pretty legs just for me. Because I'll be the only one to feel that p***y and...”
He couldn't finish his own words when a loud thud echoed from the main hall, where his friends were. It was a sound that didn't fit with the festive music that was filtering through.
With his eyes wide, Liam shook my head. Without letting go of my neck, he dragged me to the kitchen door, slamming my back against the hard wood.
What the hell was going through this man's head? Was he planning to drag me across the kitchen to the living room with his hand around my neck?
I didn't even have time to process what was happening when a scream of pain escaped my lips. However, just as I was about to scream in pain, Liam finally let go of my neck and looked toward the door.
I put my hand to my neck and began to cough in exasperation. Damn it, this i***t almost killed me right there!
However, it didn't take me long to realize that both Liam and his friends were looking toward the window with nervous expressions.
“What's he doing here?” murmured one of his friends.
“It's a bar, he doesn't usually come here,” replied another.
The men's voices could be heard whispering as the bar door opened. For a second, a delicious aroma of cinnamon and vanilla, mixed with the pine of the decorations, flooded my nostrils, but just then my eyes widened as I saw him.
“King James... it's an honor to have you here, and...” my boss's voice sounded nervous from the doorway.
But, without paying any attention, James roared again, causing my boss to jump back. Damn, I couldn't deny that James had a sinister aura; in fact, my body shuddered when I looked into his dangerous black eyes.
I was breathless when I saw him in that buttoned black suit and his hair perfectly combed back. He looked like a king, a Greek god, descended to Earth for my misfortune or my salvation.
“You,” he said as he pointed his finger at my chest. “With me. Now.”
I was stunned when I heard him say that. Was he talking to me? I had no idea what was going on; I just stood there, motionless and silent.
“I won't say it twice. Come with me now, Bridge,” he said in a deeper, more sinister tone.
Hearing my name, I shook my head, not understanding what was happening. I couldn't help but notice the expressions on Liam and his friends' faces, who were stunned by James' sudden words.
“King... she's just a waitress...” Liam announced, forcing a nervous laugh.
But once again, James ignored him and, without warning, walked heavily toward me, grabbed my arm with his huge, rough hand, and dragged me toward the exit.
I just followed his long strides, feeling his hand against mine. For some reason, that simple touch made my skin tingle in a way that Liam's grip never could.
Without further ado, James led me to a luxurious white car and opened the door.
“Get in,” he ordered me in that deep, powerful voice.
Without saying a word, I got into the car, but before I could cross my arms over my chest, James let out a deep sigh, leaned toward me, and put his hands on my thighs, leaving me frozen.
For a moment, I thought he was going to try something, but James just took the end of the seatbelt and fastened it for me, making me gasp.
Without further ado, the man, with his imposing figure, moved away, closed the door, and sat on the other side of the car. “Let's go,” he ordered the driver, who cleared his throat and started the engine.
As soon as the car started moving, I looked down. I could feel James's piercing gaze on me, which made me blush.
In fact, he had made it clear that he refused to ally himself with me. He had called me a “useless Omega.” And now he had saved me from Liam? This made no sense on this magical and strange night.
“So, shall we spend Christmas Eve f*****g?” he suggested, making my eyes widen.
I looked up at him, feeling embarrassment and confusion wash over me. “You... you heard that?” I asked, trying to swallow.
But without answering, James let out a dry, sarcastic laugh. “I hear everything that happens in my kingdom.”
“I... I'm sorry... it's just that man...” I tried to excuse myself.
But my words hung in the air when his voice interrupted, “You mean your ex-fiancé, Liam? The man you want to make jealous by using me?” his voice intervened, relentless.
When I heard him say that, I felt shame eating away at me from head to toe. How was this possible?
James knew who Liam was! Until that moment, I hadn't realized he had called me by my name. Damn, I felt like a complete i***t.
“Did you investigate me?” I asked, stunned.
James grimaced before letting out a heavy sigh. “It's my duty to know everything about the members of one of the packs in my kingdom. I also know that this man is your mate, and the same man who was engaged to Nathalia.”
Shit. I started coughing like crazy when I heard him say that. He always knew I was Liam's mate, and yet he took me to his suite!
But that wasn't the only embarrassing thing: I had proposed that he ally with me and betray Liam. Could this Christmas bring me any more humiliating surprises?
“Well, did I fail at that?” he asked in his mocking, serious tone.
It was obvious he knew more about me than I did myself, which made me feel like a fool.
Still, I quickly shook my head, unable to hide the blush on my cheeks and my nerves. I just looked him in the eyes and forced a calm smile.
"Yes, Liam is my mate, but not for long. He's going to marry Nathalia, and I'm not against it. I think it's for the best," I said.
I didn't want to continue the conversation, so I snorted and turned my head toward the window.
The cold Christmas weather hit my humiliated face as the car moved through streets decorated with colorful lights and snowmen, while James's gaze fell on the back of my neck.
My chest felt like it was about to explode as I noticed the car turning toward my house. I wasn't surprised; it was obvious that James had researched everything about me.
On the other hand, as I looked out the window, I could see James' reflection in the back of my neck. Damn, his face was like that of a Greek god: attractive and incredibly powerful.
His curly eyelashes perfectly complemented his dimpled cheeks and his full, soft lips. For a few seconds, I bit my lower lip, remembering how delicious his lips felt against mine.
I could swear that kissing this man had awakened more pleasure and desire than anything I had ever felt in my life. Thinking about it, I raised a hand to my neck, right where the hickey mark was.
“You should see me face to face. It's much better than seeing me through the reflection in the window,” he hinted, suddenly pulling me out of my thoughts.
I quickly shook my head in denial and turned my attention back to him. He was right; face to face, this man looked so much more attractive.
“You can get out now, we're here,” he said, moving his full, sweet lips softly.
I could only nod, quickly unbuckle my seatbelt, and open the door. But before getting out of the car, I turned slightly toward James.
“I... I appreciate the ride,” I said.
The man heard my words and waved his hand at me. At first, he seemed uninterested, and I decided to get out of the car, but just as I was about to do so, I felt his hand on mine.
“Bridge...” I heard that voice, which, for some reason, made everything inside me tremble with emotion.
