“Get up Ava, I really don't like it when you are like that! We need to teach him a very good lesson. He needs to pay for all he has done”. Mia tried comforting Ava as she couldn't stop crying.
Ava Collins, a twenty-six-year-old lady, struggled to live her life after losing her parents at a very tender age of nineteen. She began to live with her boyfriend, whom she had been dating for over a year before her parents' death, because of how things turned out for her parents. She couldn't find her own life, her boyfriend loved her and, most of all, supported her all the way from her final year in high school to college. Ava also wasn't a lazy type. She took on different part-time jobs and was never tired of giving her best in anything she did.
The only problem she had with her boyfriend was that he was so possessive and obsessed with her. He never let her hang out with friends and most especially male friends, he was the jealous type, and he had little faith in Ava and made their relationship a bit sour, but Ava, on the other hand, never missed an opportunity to apologize to her boyfriend for what she had done and even things she didn't do but got accused of doing by him. Because of the emotional, material and little financial support he gave to her while she was still at the lowest point in her life, she had vowed to pay him back by being with him through thick and thin. But at this point she was losing herself.
After graduating from college three years ago, she started working at an investment firm as a secretary where she worked very hard and got a lot of awards within two years of working there. But during that period she had gone through a lot at home. Her boyfriend would always stop her from attending any company party and stop her from going for term dinners. He would go ahead to seize her phone whenever she was on a break and would never let her hand out to other workers of the company anytime he mistakenly saw her talking to her boss when he came to pick her up after work. He would give her a good beating when they got home that day. She was consistently bearing everything because of all the good he had done for her, but her friend Mia, who had been her best friend right from childhood, would always let her know that keeping quiet and letting her boyfriend control her was totally interesting.
“Ava, aren't you tired? Don't you want to live life again? When are you going to stop enduring this bullsh*t and fight for yourself? I mean girl, if you can fight for yourself, I am here, and I'm ready to fight for you, so just stop taking all his disrespect already!” Mia was already getting angry at her best friend, loved her so much that she lovingn't stand and watching her get maltreated by her so-called boyfriend.
Mia found out about the way her boyfriend Derek usually abuses her a few days after Ava resigned from her work. A year ago, Ava had just suddenly resigned from work because she thought if she had a boyfriend whom she used to know, the one that loved and supported her back, then he would come back to her, but she was totally wrong about it. She thought that her boyfriend (Derek) was acting that way because she was working in a large company where she would have to see lots of people and men, to be precise, which would make everyone jealous, so she resigned and started working at a part-time job closer to their house made did things worse because she was regularly monitored by Derek and any little thing she does he would make sure to beat her up until she bleeds.
Mia asked her friend why she quit her well-paying job to come work as a part-time sales assistant, and she lied to her friend and told her it was because she didn't like the work and just wanted to do something more easy, which made Mia suspicious because she knew how much her friend loved to work, but she just ignored her answer and started talking about something else. After their discussion that day, Mia escorted Ava to her house after her shift and said goodbye before leaving.
“Bye Ava, see you tomorrow”, Mia wavered goodbye before walking away, but as she got to the road and was about to stop a cab she noticed that she was with Ava's phone, so she quickly ran back to give her. That was where she saw a sight she would never have believed if someone else had told her.
Derek was beating Ava like she was a thief or someone who had done something very wrong and couldn't be forgiven.
“What!” The shock on Mia's face was vivid as she yelled out to Derek“ you son of a b***h!” She ran and pushed him off her best friend.
“Ava? What's going on here? Why does he have a belt in his hands and why is he using it on you!?” With tears in Mia's eyes, she carried her bestie up and turned and faced Derek, “I know I am not seeing things but if all these turn out to be your fault in any little way, I promise to come back and cut those balls of yours, you son of a b***h!”
Mia carried Ava to her house that day and Ava explained everything to her with the condition not to do anything to Derek.
Mia was so angry at herself that her friend had been going through something like that, and she didn't know about it.
“I'm sorry, Mia, that I couldn't tell you. Derek said he was going to kill me if I did so, because he knows how far you can go if you get angry, so please Mia, don't do anything. I promise to sort things out with him and he willn't hit me again, trust me.”
Mia had tried her best to listen to her best friend pleading for a year now, and she hadn't done anything to Derek, but history was repeating itself again and this time she wasn't ready to back down without a fight.
“Ava say something…please!” Mia almost yelled but tried controlling her voice.
