Chapter 1: Hunted
Blood splashed into the air, and the police man driving the van saw it all transpire before his eyes.
Hitting the brake, the van screeched to a halt.
The sudden stop jolted Kira, Officer Santos, and all the other officers in the cell forward with rough force.
The sound of screeching as the tires screeched was followed by an ominous silence after the vehicle finally settled.
"What the hell is going on out there?" Santos spoke in distress, still holding on to her communication device.
But then, her words were cut off by the sharp c***k of a readied g*n from outside.
The sound was unmistakable to even Kira, who never really had business with guns, and it sent an immediate chill down her spine.
"I don't know," Santos replied honestly, then began to walk towards the cell exit. "Don't tell me you don't know either... Are you trying to deceive me by playing the victim?"
"Of course not," Kira spoke, her voice cracking. "I swear I don't know why any of this is happening. Believe me."
Officer Santos, who was about to open the door, turned suddenly to stare at Kira with the corner of her eyes.
"If you are so persistent about admitting the truth to me..." She spoke as she pulled out her g*n. "Then I guess there is one way to find out."
Outside the van, Zorvix and Ravina had completed a part of their operation.
Four police officers lay dead across the street in different areas, their blood painting the streets.
As they approached the disabled van, both assassins found themselves facing something they never anticipated.
The van was reinforced. It would take assassins like them more than a glance to tell that even the tiny windows of the van cell were bullet proof.
This meant they couldn't simply slice through the doors with their weapons as they had with human skin. They would need either explosives, specialized tools, or—
"Knock on the door," Hilton's voice commanded through their Shadowbud with casualness. "Ask politely."
"Are you serious?" Ravina muttered under her breath. "The officers in there are most likely armed. I am not the grade-A assassin who could possibly dodge bullets."
Zorvix stepped up to the rear doors of the van and tapped his knuckles against the metal in a polite manner.
"Excuse me," he called out, "we'd like to take one of your passengers for confidential reasons."
Inside the van, Santos and Kira exchanged glances. The words which the intruder spoke carried quite some audacity.
The confidence of some random individuals to ask a police officer to hand over captives was outrageous.
Pulling out a device with an LED screen, connected to a hidden camera at the back of the van, Officer Santos was finally able to see the figures behind all this.
"A lady and a man carrying weapons around," she spoke under her breath. "Against a pack of officers armed with guns... Are they out of their minds?"
"I do not need to use you as bait to surrender anymore like I was about to."
Still staring at them, she saw someone walking up to them with his g*n pulled out—it was the officer driving the van.
He was pointing the g*n at the lady as he threatened.
"Drop your weapons, hands behind your head," he ordered. "If you make any erratic or suspicious movements, I will not hesitate to shoot."
The officer's voice was loud enough for them to hear from the cell, and so Officer Santos remained in the cell, not bothering to come outside.
The two figures turned to each other and began to whisper something which, however, the small camera was able to capture with amplified loudness.
"Should I take him down, or do you want to?" the male had asked.
"I honestly don't know," the female responded. "Should we use the coin?"
"Yeah. Definitely," Zorvix responded, pulling out a coin from his pocket. "Heads."
"Tail," Ravina had chosen, leaving the officer confused with rising anger.
"Are you having problems with your hearing! Your hands behind your head!" He barked, closing in and pressing the g*n on Zorvix's head to remind them of the seriousness of the situation.
Zorvix stared at him impassively as he flipped the coin regardless of the g*n pressing against his head.
The coin spun in the air a couple of times before he caught it on the back of his hand.
"I guess it's up to me," Zorvix spoke in an almost disappointed tone, staring at the coin that was displaying heads.
*Slash.*
Not even the hidden camera was able to detect the movement of Zorvix as he severed the officer's limb pointing the g*n to his head with a clean swipe.
Everyone watching felt a lump in their throats as they watched what just transpired.
Even Officer Santos' professional composure was broken.
"Ahhhhhhhhhhhh!" The officer had screamed as tears streamed down his face in an instant. He watched as his limb bled on the ground with his head pounding, hoping all this was a dream.
"You know the weakness of you all, ordinary folks and officers," Zorvix started, walking towards the officer with calm steps, tossing his dagger up and down nonchalantly.
"It is because you hesitate to kill."
*s***h*
The officer remained frozen in his spot, not making any more noise the moment after the s***h.
It was happening so fast no one in the van cell could see the movement; they only knew a blade was swung due to the slashing sound they heard.
"You had a g*n right next to my head and refused to pull the trigger."
Everyone could only wait and watch, trying to figure out where Zorvix had sliced, and their worst expectations turned out to be what had occurred.
The officer's head tilted backwards slightly and fell, leaving the rest of his body still standing momentarily before it fell as well.
Walking closer to the van door, Zorvix knocked again.
"For the sake of avoiding unnecessary violence, I will suggest you hand over the person you got there in the van."
Ravina walked forward as well, closing up to the door till the distance between her and the door was barely a few inches. "The more you waste my time, the more we lose our mercy."
"Hurry up, will ya..."
As soon as she finished, a click was heard on the door, signaling that the door was being opened from the inside, and with slow motion, the double door was pushed open.
