The Mark That Burned
Chapter 1: The Mark That Burned
---
The moon was full, mocking me from above.
I stood in the center of the school gymnasium, surrounded by every wolf in Northwood Pack. Streamers hung from the rafters, silver and blue—Damon's colors. My heartbeat pounded so loud I was sure everyone could hear it.
Eighteen. Tonight was my birthday. Tonight, my mate would find me.
Every wolf dreams of this moment. The bond snaps into place, hot and electric, and your other half looks at you like you're the only star in their sky.
I'd dreamed of Damon Kingsley looking at me like that since I was six years old.
"You okay, Rave?" My best friend Lila squeezed my hand. Her wolf eyes glowed gold with excitement. "You're shaking."
"Just nervous." I forced a smile.
Across the gym, Damon stood with his inner circle—all football players, all Alphas-in-training. He was devastatingly beautiful. Golden hair, icy blue eyes, a jaw that could cut glass. He laughed at something his best friend said, and my chest ached with longing.
Look at me, I begged silently. Please just look at me.
His head turned. Our eyes met.
And the bond snapped.
It hit me like lightning—white-hot, consuming, everything. My knees buckled. My wolf howled inside my chest, clawing to get out. Mate. Mate. MATE.
Damon's eyes widened. He felt it too. I saw the recognition flash across his face—the shock, the disbelief... and then something colder.
Disgust.
He strode toward me, and the crowd parted like water. Every wolf watched. My heart soared even as my instincts screamed something was wrong.
"Raven Blackwood," he said, his voice loud enough for everyone to hear. He stopped a foot away, towering over me.
"Da—" My voice cracked. "Damon, I—"
He grabbed my wrist and yanked it up. Before I could process, his fangs sank into my skin.
The mark burned. But it wasn't the sweet, bonding fire I'd read about in every romance novel. It was acid. Wrong. Twisted.
I screamed.
He pulled back, blood dripping from his lips—my blood—and looked at me with eyes that held no warmth.
"I, Damon Kingsley, future Alpha of Northwood Pack," he announced, "reject you, Raven Blackwood, as my fated mate."
Gasps rippled through the crowd.
"Wait—" I choked out, tears streaming. "Why? We're fated. You can't—"
"I can." His voice was ice. "And I do."
He turned, scanning the crowd until his eyes landed on the most beautiful girl in our year—Celine Voss. Head cheerleader. Golden princess. Everything I wasn't.
"Because she," Damon pointed at her, "is the one I'm choosing."
Celine sashayed forward, a smirk curling her red lips. She wrapped her arm around Damon's waist and pressed a kiss to his cheek.
"Sorry, Raven," she purred. "Some of us are just better."
Laughter erupted. Not everyone—some wolves looked horrified—but enough. Enough to shatter me.
The bond that had just formed inside my chest began to rot. Rejection poison spread through my veins like wildfire. I collapsed to my knees, clutching my marked wrist. The skin was blackening, the wound festering.
I was going to die. A rejected mate doesn't survive the bond breaking.
Damon watched me writhe on the floor. For just a second, something flickered in his eyes—pain? Regret?—but he crushed it instantly.
"Take her out," he ordered two wolves. "I don't want my birthday ruined by a corpse."
They grabbed my arms and dragged me toward the exit. My vision blurred. My wolf whimpered, fading.
This is it, I thought. This is how I die.
They threw me outside into the cold night. The door slammed shut behind me. Music started blaring from inside the gym—Damon's victory song.
I lay in the dirt, shivering, the rejection poison eating me alive.
And then—
"Get up."
The voice wasn't human. It wasn't wolf. It was older. Ancient. It echoed inside my skull like thunder.
"You are not a rejected Omega. You are the last heir of Silvermoon. Rise, Raven. Rise and claim your throne."
Fire erupted in my chest—not the poison. Something else. Something golden and burning and endless.
My wolf didn't just wake up.
She exploded.
I screamed, but this time it wasn't pain. My bones snapped and reformed. Fur erupted from my skin—but not gray, not brown. Silver. Pure, blinding silver, streaked with moonlight.
The moon above me pulsed. Light poured down like a spotlight, lifting me off the ground. My eyes—my human eyes—were still open, and I saw myself reflected in the gymnasium windows.
A wolf of pure starlight. Massive. Terrifying. Magnificent.
The gym door burst open. Wolves flooded out, shifting into their own forms—brown, black, gray.
They all stopped.
Every single one of them lowered their heads. Their wolves bowed to me.
Damon pushed through the crowd, still human. His eyes went wide with a fear I'd never seen on his perfect face.
"What—what the hell are you?" he whispered.
I opened my new jaws and spoke with a voice that shook the earth:
"Your worst mistake."
