Chapter 6

Ava settled into her desk, unpacking her bag and arranging her supplies. The office was busy but orderly, everyone moving with purpose, and she felt a small thrill of excitement. For the first time in weeks, she felt like she belonged somewhere. Monica lingered nearby, her sharp eyes tracking Ava’s every move. “If you think you’re going to impress him just by showing up, you’re wrong,” she muttered under her breath. Ava ignored her, letting the words slide off her back. Jealousy had never intimidated her. A few hours passed with orientation tasks, emails, and introductions. Ava tried to absorb everything, keeping her focus sharp. She was determined to show she was capable, even if the office buzzed with tension from colleagues like Monica. A soft knock at the door caught her attention. “Ava?” She looked up as an assistant gestured toward the elevator. “Mr. West would like to see you for a brief meeting.” Ava’s stomach fluttered. Damian West? She had heard the name in passing—one of the city’s top businessmen—but she had no idea he was the man from the party last week. She nodded and followed the assistant, keeping her nerves under control. The elevator ride felt longer than usual. Ava reminded herself this was just a job, nothing more. Nothing personal. She had to stay professional. When the doors opened, Damian was standing by the window, reviewing some documents. He turned slowly as she entered, his piercing blue eyes briefly meeting hers. “You’re punctual,” he said, his voice calm but authoritative. “Yes, sir. You asked to see me?” Ava replied, keeping her tone polite. “I like punctuality,” he said, his expression unreadable. “Sit.” Ava lowered herself into the chair across from him, careful to maintain composure. Damian leaned back slightly, studying her like he was measuring her every move. She had no idea that the subtle intensity she felt in the room was familiar to him for reasons she didn’t yet know. “You’ve had a good first morning,” he said finally. “You seem organized and focused. That’s promising.” “Thank you, sir. I’m eager to learn,” Ava replied, trying to suppress the strange flutter in her chest. Damian nodded. “Good. Working here isn’t just a job. You’ll need to be quick, adaptable, and able to handle pressure. I’ll be keeping an eye on your progress.” Ava’s stomach tightened slightly at the mention of being watched, but she reminded herself it was just part of the job. Nothing more. “Your desk is ready. Meet the staff, complete your orientation, and don’t let anyone-especially Monica-distract you,” Damian added. Ava smiled politely, nodded, and returned to her desk. Monica’s glare followed her like a shadow, but Ava didn’t care. If jealousy was the worst she’d face today, she could handle it. Still, as she worked, she couldn’t shake a subtle feeling that this place—and this boss—would challenge her in ways she hadn’t anticipated. She just didn’t know yet that the man she’d been drawn to at the party was right above her.
