Chapter 1
YOUR birthday is coming, Orphis,” said Beatrix. “What’s your plan?” I threw her a gaze as we strode towards our classroom. She was tying her hair. Her bright kinky eyes was in front as she walked swaying her hips. I’ve known Beatrix since I was six. She was a natural beauty. Naturally famous, especially among men. She had a brunette hair, fair skin, and a really nice body. Her house was near my village. Hers was nearer at the school and growing up, I had the hobby of picking her up every morning so we could walk to school together. “Just the usual.” I let out a small smile. “You and Andy can come over the house.” It’s my debut this coming Friday. I knew what she meant and what she was expecting. A grand debut, or maybe a party. She’d been telling me her opinions on how I should celebrate my special day. Said it should be something memorable. But I can’t really do something about that. I didn’t want to ask my grandma for something I knew we can’t afford. Besides, if she and Andy will come to celebrate with me, it’d feel just the same. “No party, drinks or something different?” Her brows slightly met. There was an unbelieving look in her face. I shook my head. “I’m sorry.” “Why are you apologizing, dummy?” Andy’s voice is what made me broke the eye-contact with Beatrix. She was behind us. She raised a brow and walked in between us. “It’s your birthday. You get to choose how to celebrate it.” “Of course.” Beatrix crossed her arms. “But I’m saying that she should at least have fun. A debut only comes once in a lifetime.” “She will have fun, Beatrix.” Andy wiggled her eyebrows. “Just not the kind of fun you have in your mind. You are two different person.” “I know! But you don’t get my point. She’s turning legal age. Has she been in a party? No. Has she ever drink? No. Has she ever tried doing something really fun? No, Andy.” “We always meet and come out every weekend to have fun.” Andy retorted. “I know your lifestyle and escapades, but don’t think everyone is necessarily the same as you. ” Beside Beatrix, I also have Andy. We were friends since we were kids. But despite the negative and positive attitude, they always stand against each other. Perhaps the reason why they were attracted to each other was because they were opposite. You know, like magnets. “I can’t throw a party, but we can drink.” I smiled sheepishly. “Let me know what you want.”   Beatrix was that girly type in our group. Andy, however, was the boyish one. But that was just an adjective that I think described her best. She was a straight girl. So was Beatrix, obviously. As for me, I think I’d fit best in the simple and invisible type of girl. “Really?” Beatrix turned to me, her eyes twinkling. “Cool! At least there’s someone here who’s smart enough to get me.” “Dumb. She said that because you’d throw tantrums otherwise.” “Shut up.” Beatrix frowned. “If you don’t like it, don’t come.” She gave Andy a once-over before walking inside the room. Andy and I made eye-contact, like an automatic response whenever Beatrix end the conversation with a walk out. She shook her head and smiled. And that would be the end of it. I guess being friends for years had allow us to understand each other. Our unlikeable behavior, likes and dislikes. Over the time, our sharp edges became more easy to take in. Andy clung her hand around my arm, grinning. We followed the annoyed brunette who was now in front of her designed seat. But if you think about it. Maybe I should give it a try. The birthday party Beatrix was talking about. Afterall, Beatrix was right. I’m turning legal age. There was not much that happened in the morning. We took our two subjects and left immediately to go at Beatrix’s house. It was the drill after an early class. Beatrix let us swim in their pool, have our stuff in her room. Shared gossips about that one girl she hated on the Fine Arts building. I was supposed to leave before seven when Beatrix told us to sleep over. It wasn’t really a problem since we only have one class tomorrow and it was on ten a.m, so I just texted my cousin, Oz, to let our grandmother know. Beatrix lived alone. Well, not totally because she was with her butler and personal maid. She came from a rich family. An only child. Almost a decade of friendship and not once I saw her parents. She said they come every Christmas Eve but I always missed the chance to meet them personally. I didn’t really think much about it a lot, but sometimes I do wonder why Beatrix wasn’t complaining about it. I mean, she basically grew up without them. And for someone who loved attention, and I meant it not negatively, she seemed pretty fine about it. “You should just live in with Beatrix,” Oz squinted his eyes as he attentively looked at me. “Really, you three are getting more inseparable.” I gave him a taunting look. “You’re saying that because you don’t have friends.” “I don’t need friends.” “More like, you can’t.” I chortled and took a bite on my sandwich. He was sulking this early in the morning. I went home at seven, after I took a bath and put on clothes, he was here like he prepared his speech after I spent the night again at Beatrix’s house. Oz never liked Beatrix. Andy passed, barely. But no matter how I tried to say good things about Beatrix, he just couldn’t see the good in her. He didn’t want to try. I didn’t know what was the deal, but every single time Beatrix was in this house, he’d either leave or locked himself in his roon. “Do you hate Beatrix or do you generally hate girls?” “Both.” He turned around to get a mug. Probably to make coffee. “What does she ever did to you?” “I don’t need a reason to dislike unlikeable girls, Orphis.” Wincing, I shook my head. “With that attitude, you won’t have a girlfriend.” “Did you ever get a boyfriend with yours?” He spat back and looked over his shoulder. “Yeah.” That got me. I eyed him with a weird look as I finished the sandwich with one bite. Hold up. Who pissed him off today? Just like the usual, I went to pick up Beatrix. Andy’s house was in the opposite direction so we rarely really come to school together. Only sometime when she was willing to wait for us. And unlike Beatrix, Andy lived with her whole family. She lived in a villa, with all her relatives surrounding her. She had a big family and they were nice. They were really welcoming. Beatrix and I once spent our summer vacation with them in a private beach resort that Beatrix’s family owned. That left us the unforgettable memory when Beatrix challenged Andy on who can swim faster and she almost drowned. Beatrix hated it. She was embarrassed and didn’t talk to us for like, a whole month. We read the room and dropped it, although we still remember it, every single time we’re planning about summer vacation. That was just how we spend our school days and summer together. And maybe Oz was right. We were getting more inseparable. “Oh my…” Beatrix gasped. She raised her brows with a shock expression on her face. She looked down on the table the second time to pick up the paper. No. It was a letter. On MY table. Andy quickly moved beside Beatrix to look at what she was holding. Beatrix flipped it. “To Orphis Windsor?” It was Beatrix, with a suspricious tone. I tilted my head in confusement. “What?” “You have a letter.” “Read it.” It was Andy. “Wait––“ It was too late because Beatrix already opened it. It was a red envelope. The paper inside has a burnt design on the sides, and I could clearly see through its back how good the penmanship was. It had my name, Orphis Windsor written on the back. And my name wasn’t so common to have another share it with me. My brows met as I tried to think of someone who could’ve done this. But I didn’t have any more friends beside Andy and Beatrix. They were the only ones I hang out with. I was a ball of curiousness as I stood in front of them waiting for either of them to say something. I saw their eyes moved, running from left to right. My brows creased as I watched them read the letter I was dying to read myself. I put my bag down before I moved forward. Their silence and gauging expressions were killing me. “Beatrix…” Her eyes squinted as she gave me a quick glance. “You sly cat…”
