Rebel's Pulse
EPISODE 1:
Jana crouched in the shadows, her medic's bag slugged against her back. New Eden's streets were deadly quiet tonight. The regime's drones buzzed overhead like angry insects, searching for anyone stupid enough to defy curfew.
A scuffle echoed down the alley. Jana moved instinctively, peering around a dumpster. A guy â Kael â was wrestling with a black-uniformed officer. Jana's pulse spiked. She knew that look in Kael's eyes: desperation.
She darted forward, grabbing a discarded pipe. "Hey!" she shouted, swinging it at the officer.
The officer went down. Kael stumbled back, breathing hard. His eyes locked on Jana. "Thanks," he rasped.
Jana nodded, checking the officer's pulse. "He's alive. We need out."
Kael grabbed her hand. "Come with me." His touch sent a spark through her. But Jana pulled free. "I don't do 'with me'," she said, backing away.
Kael's gaze lingered. "I'll find you."
Jana turned to leave, but Kael's voice stopped her. "Wait." He pulled out a small, battered ID badge from his jacket. "Do you know what this is?"
Jana took it cautiously. The badge had a name: Elian Vex. Chancellor Vex's son. Her eyes widened. "Where did you get this?"
Kael's expression turned guarded. "Found it. Means the regime's got a weakness."
Jana's mind raced. The resistance had been looking for leverage against the regime for years. This could be it. "What do you want in return?" she asked, handing the badge back.
Kael's gaze drifted to the badge, then back to her. "A meeting. Tomorrow. Underground clinic in Sector 4. Come alone."
Jana narrowed her eyes. Was this a trap? But the prospect of a lead kept her rooted. "Why me?" she asked.
A hint of a smile played on Kael's lips. "You saved me. Maybe I owe you."
He vanished into the shadows, leaving Jana wondering what she'd just gotten herself into.
Jana stood frozen for a moment, her heart still racing from the adrenaline and Kael's sudden disappearance. She tucked the memory of his smile away, focusing on the task at hand. She needed to get out of there before the regime's patrols came looking for the downed officer.
She quickly scanned the area, ensuring she wasn't being watched, and then made her way back to her own hideout â a cramped, dingy apartment in the run-down part of Sector 3. The resistance had set her up there, knowing she'd blend in with the other desperate souls trying to survive in New Eden.
As she slipped inside, locking the makeshift door behind her, Lena, her closest friend in the resistance, looked up from the makeshift table where she was patching up a wound on a young rebel's arm. "Hey, what's going on? You were supposed to be back hours ago," Lena said, concern etched on her face.
Jana dropped her bag and rubbed her temples, trying to process everything that had happened. "I ran into someone. A guy. He had Elian Vex's ID badge," she said, keeping her voice low.
Lena's eyes widened. "What? Where is he?"
Jana shook her head. "He's gone. But he wants to meet me tomorrow. Underground clinic in Sector 4."
The young rebel, a boy no older than 15, winced as Lena applied a fresh bandage. "Sounds like a setup," he muttered.
Jana's jaw set. "Could be. But it's a lead. We have to take it."
Lena nodded, her expression thoughtful. "We'll get the team on it. See if we can dig up anything on this guy Kael."
Jana's mind was already racing with possibilities. What did Kael want with her? And what did he mean by "maybe he owed her"? She pushed the thoughts aside, focusing on the mission. The regime wouldn't know what hit them.
"Get the word out," Jana said, her voice low and determined. "We're going in."
The room fell silent, the only sound the soft hum of the makeshift lights overhead. They all knew what that meant. They were taking a risk, but it was one they had to take.
