CHAPTER 1
“Sophia?” Doc. Bryan whispered, trying to understand if it was a reality, his eyes widened taking in the shocking scene before him. His hands squeezed into fists as he struggled to contain his anger. Sophia, his ex-girlfriend who he just reconciled with her due to her constant plead and promise to change and also to make their relationship work again laid all cuddled up on her bed, her head resting peacefully on the chest of an older man and both seemed to be naked under a blanket. He had arrived at Sophia’s house with a very colorful flower in his hand. She was not one that fancied red roses, she loved the colors of her flowers mixed, according to her, it made her feel so excited whenever she looks at it. He swung his phone out of his ears as he looked at them more stunningly. "Hello, hello, Sir, hello?" the voice on the call repeated, sensing Doc. Bryan’s distraction. He ended the call abruptly without a word. "Sophia!" he exclaimed so loud, his voice trembling with battered emotions as it echoed through the room. Sophia opened her alcohol-blurred eyes, on seeing Doc, she jumped up from the bed, holding the blanket that covered them to her chest. Just then, the man beside her jerked as he woke up as well. "Who the hell are you?" the man grumbled, rubbing his eyes of the sleepiness in it. "No, no, no, don't say that, please," her voice shaking, she begged the man beside her, who was now very much awake as she tried to put on her lingerie turning repeatedly to look at Doc with tears compounded at the side of her eyes already. She never for once thought that he would catch her in the act again. "You don't tell me what to do, young lady," he ordered, his voice filled with disdain. Doc stood there stunned by the older man's audacity "I give you the kind of life you want, the luxury you so wish, I pay your bills, take you to anywhere you want yet you still keep boys like this around you," he scorned, pointed a finger at Doc as he took him all in with his eyes from head to toe. "Can you just stop, please?" She busted, her hands shaking and her voice trembling. Doc just stood there frozen in shock for a moment feeling very disappointed in her once again. He turned to leave without saying another word. Sophia followed him hurriedly, pleading, "Please, I can explain”, grabbing the robe she wore over her lingerie firmly and her phone in her other hand. “It's not what you think Babe”, she continued As they reached the front door, Doc turned around, his voice shadowed with deep anger. "How could you do this to me again Sophia? “I'm so sorry”, Sophia stuttered amidst tears “For the second time Sophia, the second time I caught you cheating. We broke up before and you begged, Sophia you begged for another chance, saying it was a mistake. Now this? Is this also a mistake?" He asked aggressively “I am so sorry, I don't know what came over me”, Sophia pleaded with profuse tear dropping down her eyes like it would never stop. "He gives you the life you want, luxury, bills, travels and all," Doc said, his voice trembling with anger. "So what do I do? I give you peanuts right? Haven't I given you everything you've ever asked of me, Sophia?" he asked more aggressively looking at her with great disgust, as all he felt like doing at the moment was to strangle the life out of her for causing him to hurt again but he just could not bring himself to do it. His hands folded into a fist right beside him. "You...you have," Sophia stammered, her eyes bloody red, dripping of tears. “I'm done, we are done and this time, we are not coming back together, I seriously mean it”, Doc’s expression hardened. “Please”, Sophia said as she fell to her knees, rubbing her palms together, her body trembling and in more profuse tears. He turned and walked away, leaving Sophia kneeling on the ground, pleading. Immediately he exited the gate, Doc recalled he still held the flowers meant for Sophia. He dropped them carelessly to the ground and got into his car. ”Absolute rubbish”, he muttered as he continued walking to his car, a sleek black Mercedes-Benz Maybach, then quickly drove off. *** Doc drove with a very heavy heart, having all mixed feelings of disappointment, sadness, heart break, frustrated, depressed and numbness. He repeatedly placed his left arm on his forehead as he leaned his elbow to the edge of the window while using his right hand to rotate the steering. At intervals, he punched the steering like it was some sort of punching bag or as if it was the reason for his feelings. He drove for a while before his phone began to ring, he ignored the call thinking it was Sophia but the caller was persistent. After several missed calls, he turned his phone over displaying the same caller he had abruptly ended the call with earlier. He answered the call, without taking a single breath he yelled, “Can’t whatever you want to talk about wait?” he asked, his frustration really evident. “I’m sorry Sir, but it can’t wait, this is urgent”, the caller replied in a soothing tone “Make it quick”, Doc. Bryan grunted, trying to connect his AirPods to his phone to free his hands. As his eyes moved between the road and his phone causing him to be distracted. On looking at his phone again, he lost control of his car and it collided with a taxi. It was quiet for some minutes as Doc tried to take in what had happened. He finally staggered out of his car and walked towards the car he collided with. He noticed it was badly bashed and no one came out of it so he looked to see if anyone was in the car. He found the driver and a passenger lying lifeless. The driver had a little amount of blood rolling down his face from the effect of hitting his forehead on the window. “Oh, no, no, this cannot be happening”, Doc stuttered. He looked further at the backseat and found a passenger; a young lady dressed quiet befitting for an interview on a neatly tailored navy blue skirt revealing her curves, paired with a crisp white blouse and a fitting beige blazer. She has a simple jewelry one which added a touch of excellence with a subtle make up which was now messed up and a sleek low bun which was now roughened. She had fallen to the sit in a lying position, her leg seems to have sprouted in a bit of a dislocated manner whilst some white A4 papers with printed inks and a brown envelop were scattered around her. Doc’s attention was mutually divided by the soft glow of the lady's face but then he smacked back to reality and without wasting time, he rushed back to his car to get his phone and he called the hospital where he worked. “Hello, yes, its Doctor Bryan speaking, I have an emergency, I need you to send an ambulance immediately, I would text my location to you as soon as I end this call”, he spoke swiftly. “Okay, right away Doc”, the caller at the other end replied. As he was typing his location to send, the driver’s blurry eyes quickly opened and he felt a pain. “Ouch, my head…” he made to touch the source of the pain but his fingered touched sticky blood instead. His eyes widened as he brought his finger down and saw the blood. He quickly remembered he had a passenger in the car. Not caring much about his own self, he turned to the backseat and found the lady lying motionless. “Ohh no”, he muttered as he stumbled out of his car to get help. His gaze caught Doc. Bryan, standing nearby, engrossed in his phone. “Help… me please”, the driver pleaded, his voice very faint as her gasped for air, his hand firmly gripped his head. Doc. Bryan swiftly sent the text and rushed to the driver, “Hey man, be careful”, he cautioned, taking the driver back to the taxi. The driver collapsed onto the seat, till firmly gripping his head. “What happened…?” “Em… don’t worry about that for now”, Doc. Bryan replied shortly the continued, “Let’s focus on getting you both to the hospital for medical attention” Haven said that, he assessed the situation of the driver’s head. Without wasting any more time, Doc. Bryan folded his thick handkerchief into a compressed and placed it to the driver’s head to reduce the bleeding. The driver held it in place, groaning in pain. As Doc. Bryan turned to check the lady, the driver anxiously asked, “The lady… will she be okay?” Doc. Bryan’s expression turned faint as he unbuttoned the first button of his shirt, did same to the hands of his shirt and as he folded the left hand of his shirt, “I hope so” he muttered, then added "She can't be dead".
