Work Day

614 Words
Monday in the office starts promptly at 8am. Luckily I was up and ready to go by 7:30 and the office is on the property. The grandfathers had turned one of the old barns into an office on the inside. You would never know, but as soon as you open the barn doors, you are greeted by hardwood floors, marble countertops, several meeting rooms and offices as well as the loft turned into an open breakroom. All equipped with water and electricity. Top of the line computers and large tv that always has the news on. First meeting of the day is touch-base to determine what is going on and who is needed where. After that, I meet with Aunt Patsy so she can get me caught up on all the financials, her spreadsheets and charts. Though I was part time for the last couple of years, I still find it astonishing how we had 2 ways of doing the same thing and how she stayed organized. By the end of the day, I have begun to move all her information to my format I have used for years and was highly useful at Colonial when dealing with multiple accounts for the same client. Aunt Patsy did not seem to care, she was just seeing the light at the end of the tunnel.”OOO, my darling niece, I might even retire before the end of June at this rate!” “We shall see Auntie, might need you to remain available on speed dial.” We both just laugh as we make our way out of the office barn. It was about 5:30 and I saw the ranch men finishing up for the day and headed to their house to get washed up and ready for dinner. I did notice my dad riding his horse, Chance with the guys. I was wondering where he was most of the day. I wave and walk into the house. Mama as always has dinner already on the table. Roast with all the fixins and salad. I wash up and take my seat next to Jackson. Dad comes in, washes up and sits next to mama. As we are passing the food around I ask dad what he was doing out on Chance today. O, honey, I was just out helping the guys. One of the bulls got out earlier chasing the heifers we just got in. So we had to wrangle them up before a mess was caused. Remember, never forget your craft and what you are born to do, sitting up in an office all day. Getting in the saddle to work hard is where your roots lie.” “Yes, daddy,” I said with a smile. “Just be careful out there. I know you are rough and tough, but not getting any younger. I know how crazy it can get out there herding cattle. I know Chance has your back also, but just saying” “Yes, dear” He smiled. “I sure have missed your worrying self around here. Funny how you travel the world on your own like its nothing, but worry the most about your dear old daddy” “Well of course, I love you” we both smiled and continued on with dinner. I head up to my room afterwards to send out the emails I had promised my old manager I would do on Monday. Luckily we have a template for this sort of thing, though I added a personal touch to it for several of my closest clients. After I sent them all out, I close my laptop and go to take a shower.
