On the Run, South of El QaaA long, frustrating night move brought them within what Shake thought must be five or six kilometers of El Qaa. They could have made better time, but unexpected encounters with foot patrols forced them to dodge, weave off-course, and hide a number of times during the night. Early in their first night on the run, Shake took point with his little compass and nearly walked them directly into three men taking a break near a cluster of rocks on the other side of a cedar stand. Fortunately, one of the men was smoking and Shake spotted the glow of his cigarette in time to warn Zana and move back inside the trees.
