Vera, adopted just days after she was born in Lubbock, TX, was at the very beginning of her career starring as the lead soprano for the Austin Opera Company in Austin, Texas. She had just accepted the exciting role of Cosette in the Broadway musical, Les Misérables, leaving her friends and family behind.
Vera found a cute little bungalow in what seemed like a quiet neighborhood. She felt excited and content looking out her living room window as she imagined what this new chapter would bring.
Vera's new house was on the corner overlooking a quaint park with a swing set and a stream that ran right through the middle. The house on the other side of hers was very well kept. She had never seen who lived there but noticed that packages would be taken inside, and the yard was tended to nicely. She thought maybe whoever lived there worked nights or had a hectic schedule. She made a mental note to make sure to introduce herself to her neighbor as soon as she could.
Opening night of her first show with the opera was finally happening! Vera stepped on stage to perform her first song. As she made her way through the music, she scanned the audience, making eye contact with people to connect them to her character. Vera's eyes landed on a very attractive man just a few rows away from the front. Her heart felt like it was going to burst out of her chest. She had never experienced this before and thought she was having a panic attack. The man's eyes were fixed on her. They did not break eye contact for what felt like an eternity. Vera was snapped out of it when her co-star touched her arm. As any good artist knows, the show must go on, so Vera continued with her song as if nothing had happened. A word kept popping into her head, but she could not understand why. It was faint, but the voice said, "mate". As soon as she was able to get off stage, she ran to her dressing room to try to calm herself down. She sat cross-legged on the floor with her back against the wall and took several big breaths. Who was that man? Was he the reason her heart tried to exit her body? Vera tried to shake it off and made a mental note not to look at him again.
Vera was ready to make her next entrance for the show and swore to herself not look at the mystery heart palpitation man. As soon as she stepped on stage to sing, the only word that came out of her mouth was "mate". The man playing her on-stage father looked at her reassuringly. She tried to play it off by improvising some lines to get back on track. Out of habit, Vera scanned the audience again. It was like her eyes had a mind of their own. They found the man again. This time, she noticed he was with a very beautiful woman. She didn't know this man from Adam, but she felt broken when she saw his arm resting on the woman's shoulder. Their eyes connected again. He looked at Vera as if he knew something she didn't. Like he had known her for ages. The familiarity of his gazed startled her. She looked away to dance and when she looked back, the couple was gone.
After the show Vera stood out in the lobby to greet and take pictures with audience members. Although she looked, she couldn't find the mystery man anywhere. It's not like she would have said anything to him anyway, but part of her longed to figure out if he triggered her panic attack. Once everyone had left, she grabbed her bag and drove home. As she pulled into her driveway, she saw a person leaving next door. It was dark, so she had trouble seeing the person's characteristics, but she could tell the person was a woman. Vera glanced at the door and found a face looking back at her. Her heart could have stopped, and she wouldn't have known the difference.
Vera's fate has been set in motion. At 24 years old, she was about to find out who she truly was as well as how this new stranger would fit into her life.
