Chapter 4

751 Words
“You’re telling me that my dad was assigned to a woman, and instead of meeting her and potentially marrying her, he married my mom instead?” “Not exactly Doll. You dad was engaged to the woman he was assigned to, but then he met your mom. He broke off the engagement and ran away from his duties. Then you happened and your parents got married.” “What happened to the woman my dad was assigned to?” “She married one of her other Fates and has a happy life with him.” I am pacing the floor at this point. “Okay, so there is another guy out there that is assigned as my 4th Fate. So we just find him, and then I choose between you 4 who I am going to marry?” James stood up, “Basically. If we can’t find your 4th Fate, it would be better if we could figure out how to solve this problem rather than bringing it to the Council.” “You are telling me that in 2023 there are still arranged marriages, just the woman doesn’t know?” “Only special women are assigned Fates Love.” “Great, so I am super special and get forced into an arranged marriage.” Chris shakes his head, “Arranged marriages or not aside Des, we need to find your 4th Fate. Is there anyone that you have met since college that you have felt attracted to in the same way you have felt attracted to us three?” “I mean, I saw this guy drop off his kid at my job once, he was attractive. We dated for a few months but then he broke it off.” “How old was this kid Doll?” “He was 9, I think.” James shook his head, put his coffee cup down and stood up. “Can’t be him if he already had a kid that old.” “I don’t know. Okay, I haven’t exactly been putting myself out there. Not to inflate your ego’s, but every time I went on a date, I found myself thinking about one of you three and how maybe I was supposed to be with you.” Derrek and Chris stand and exchange grins with James. “Awe, you thought of us Love?” Chris comes over and gently, like I’m about to break, puts his hand on my shoulder. “It’s okay Des. Breathe, we will figure it out.” As if on cue to remind myself that I am human, at least part human, my stomach growls. I didn’t eat anything yet today. Glancing at the clock, it says 11:50. Man, I am starving. I really want my normal Saturday pizza but that would be odd to pretend like everything is normal right? Chris chuckles, “Are you still doing that thing where you sleep in late on Saturday and then order a pizza and eat the entire thing for the rest of the day while watching TV?” “So, what if I am? I am a strong, independent 23-year-old with a good career and a house that I own and live in with my best friend.” Derrek leans down and picks up Cherry, who happily licks his face. “Is this the best friend you are referring to Love? Cause I am pretty sure that dogs are supposed to be man’s best friend.” “Cherry was the last thing my mom and dad gave me before their car accident. So yes, she is my best friend and one of the few reminders that my parent’s loved me.” James laughed and smacked Derrek on the back, “Nice going pal. Way to woo the girl, reminding her that her parents are dead. First the wall of paintings, now the dog. Anything else you want to bring up? Maybe the fact that her dad won’t be able to walk her down the aisle at her wedding?” Cherry wriggles out of Derrek’s arms, and lands gently on the floor before coming over to me. She slowly puts her right front paw on my left foot, her way of comforting me. Derrek rolled his eyes at James. “Sorry Love, that was harsh. Why don’t I take you to get a bite and we can catch up while these other two lovebirds try and come up with a plan.” “Okay, but I’m driving.”
