Chapter One

Piper's Point of View “I really think you and the Beta here will make an excellent match,” I held the phone to my ear whilst using two fingers on my left hand to imitate a gun and shoot myself in the temple. “Well in that case Alpha Michaels I look forward to seeing you this evening” I said in my most genuine sounding voice, my Beta Ben was trying to put me off the phone call by dancing around my desk. “And you, Luna Avery, take care” Alpha Michaels disconnected. “Jesus Christ,” I sighed putting my head in my hands. “If the Beta’s half as boring as his Alpha, I’ve got no bloody hope.” My name is Piper Avery. I am 30 years old and the Luna of a very successful Werewolf pack and right now I am trying to arrange my own marriage. I have been unable to find my mate in the last 12 years. I’ve looked in all packs around the states and even some in Ireland, England and Australia. I’ve looked everywhere and I’m exhausted! I’m not particularly bothered about being mated. I’m very happy as I am, I like my own company and unlike other she wolves I don’t think I need my mate to complete me.  But I am bothered about providing an air, and I can’t do that without a male wolf and some of his best swimmers. As for the rest of the package, he needs to be attractive enough that we don’t have to double bag in bed, (One to cover his face and one for me just in case his falls off), Loyal enough that the only scent I smell on him is mine, and tough enough to stand by my side.  And the perfect match for me is sat opposite with his feet on my desk, laughing at my current predicament, so without hope, I propose to him - of sorts - for the millionth time. “Ben, why don’t you just marry me? C’mon we’re an excellent team, you’re an awesome fighter and incredibly good looking.” “I’m also incredibly gay Piper,” He pointed out to me. “That makes you even more of a good choice. We’d only have to do it a couple of times and then we’re done. I’m pregnant and you’re off the hook” “Darling I love you, but the mere thought of us having s*x makes me feel violently sick”  “Turkey baster then?” I pleaded. “Not a chance, I’d never look at a chicken the same way again.” I huffed. The Moon Goddess had gifted me with the best friend any woman could ever ask for. I should be thanking my lucky stars. But instead, I was whining like a small child. I spun myself around in my chair 180 degrees and looked out of the window. ‘Window’ was a bit of an understatement to be honest. The whole back wall of my office was glass and all I could see for miles were fields and forest. The view was absolutely my most favorite part of this house. Down below the window was the decking area that led out from the dining hall, steps from the decking took you up to a manicured grass area which was perfect for picnics and outdoor sports games, and after that nothing but meadows, fields and forest. And it was mine. This was my home. It started off as My Mom and Dads, they welcomed William into the world followed by me just a few seconds later. William didn’t make it though, and I became the sole air.    My Mom and Dad are enjoying every second of their retirement. They left a week after my 18th Birthday, just three days after the pack and all its responsibilities were handed over to me.  It wasn’t a massive surprise; my father had been grooming me for the position of ‘Top Dog’ – his little inside joke – since I was 14 and I loved it. I’d never been interested in doing anything other than running the pack.  All I’d ever wanted to do was become my Dad. My Mom was a wonderful woman and her biggest aspiration was having a big family and looking after her children. But after the complications with me and William it wasn’t to be. She had a miscarriage, and then a still born. That shattered my Mom’s heart into a billion pieces, she vowed she would never put her or my dad through that again. She turned her entire focus being a Mother to me. Sometimes I was the luckiest girl in the world, and sometimes I felt damn right suffocated.   “What time are you headed over there?” Ben asked, pulling me out of my little trip down memory lane. “About 6” I replied with a huge sigh “Better get ready then hot stuff.” He was right, I was dressed in a vest top and running shorts. I’d been out running in wolf and human form and I currently smelt like ass! There was no way I was going to attract anything with a pulse looking and smelling like this! Let alone someone that might give me a baby. With as much enthusiasm as I could muster I got out of my chair and headed out of the office. There was no need to give Ben any instructions, he'd been training as my Beta for as long as I had been training as a Luna. In the 12 years we'd worked together we had never had a disagreement about how the pack was run. We'd also never had an argument in all the time we'd been friends. I took the stairs two at a time up to my apartment on the fifth floor. The place was bloody huge with five double bedrooms and en-suites, a formal dining area that I never used, and a huge living space. There were double doors leading out from my room and the living room on to a huge wrap around balcony. That was my favourite part of the whole place and where I spent most of my time. If you gave me the choice I'd spend all of my time outside! I'd had a hot tub installed on the balcony, which even Ben thought was extravagant, and that was my pride and joy. I looked at it wistfully, if I didn't have this bloody match making dinner to go to I'd be out there book in one hand and beer in the other. Instead I headed to my bathroom to do the whole beautifying thing, which wasn't something that was ever high on my agenda. I'd always struggled with being girly and that was one of the main reason my Gamma was a female. Jessica was a trained make-up artist and made a very good living out of it. Not only that but she could work miracles when it came to my hair and could pick out clothes so that I actually looked like I knew what fashion was. But the main reason she was so brilliant was that she was my God(dess) daughter. Right now she was curling my blonde hair and pinning it into some sort of intricate up-do. She'd already spent a big chunk of time making my make-up look like I wasn't that bothered about make-up and picked out a red evening dress and matching shoes. The dress was off the shoulder with a split thigh and would probably only look good until I ate something. Nothing else was going to fit in that dress! "Ta-Da" Jessica declared eagerly, turning me towards the full length mirror. "The shoes are a bit wizard of Oz!" I grumbled. "Oh for Goddess sake! Talk about ungrateful" she pouted. "I'm sorry Jess, you've done a fantastic job as always. And on the bright side maybe I can tap the shoes together three times if the evening goes south!" "I don't know why you put yourself through this Piper, can't you just trust that the Moon Goddess has a mate for you?" "I trust that if the Moon Goddess had a mate for me, He'd have shown up by now. It's not like I haven't looked in most of the packs on the planet" "Maybe your mate isn't a wolf" Jessica spoke my main fear outloud I curled my lip back, and she pissed herself laughing. "You'll be lucky to get anything with that face!" I turned my frown upside down and gave her my best smile. "Much better, go get 'em tiger!"
