Chapter 1
"Mom... Look, I got a job," Selena said, showing off her new uniform.
"Wow... thank goodness. I'm proud of you, Selena. You're truly a daughter to be proud of," Claudia said, hugging Selena affectionately.
"I work at a very luxurious five-star hotel. Even though it's in the East, I guess it's no problem, since our house is on the border," Selena said proudly.
"Yes, I hope Mr. Lorenzo and Mr. Matteo will understand," Claudia replied with a smile.
Then, Claudia glanced at a girl ironing the clothes piled on the table.
"Aruna, hurry up and finish all the laundry. I'm going out to eat with Selena to celebrate her job. The clothes will be picked up by customers soon," Claudia said.
"Mom, I have to work too. I can't be late again. Yesterday I finished the laundry and I was late for work," Aruna replied softly.
"Aruna! You dare contradict your mother, who has painstakingly raised you since you were little?!" Claudia glared, her voice rising.
"But, Mom—"
"No buts! Look at your older sister! She's got a decent, good job at a luxurious, five-star hotel. How can you not be ashamed, Aruna? How can you still stare at your neighbors without shame, even though you only work in a simple cafe?" Claudia snapped.
"Why should I be ashamed, Mom? I work too and earn legitimate money. I don't sell myself or degrade myself just to get a job," Aruna retorted, her voice trembling but firm.
SLACK!
A hard slap flew across Aruna's cheek, making her head tilt. Aruna was shocked, her eyes wide and staring at the floor. Selena, overcome with anger, slapped her sister without hesitation. Aruna's cheek turned red, hot and painful.
"What do you mean? Are you saying I sold myself?!" Selena stood defiantly in front of Aruna, her eyes filled with anger.
"I never said that... but people did," Aruna replied softly.
"You want to die, don't you?!" Selena screamed hysterically, pulling Aruna's hair.
"Aaahh! Let go! It hurts, Selena! Let go!" Aruna screamed, trying to free herself.
"If you want to die, let your sister help you! Let me kill you, Aruna!" Selena dragged Aruna's body into the laundry room.
Selena grabbed a water hose and doused Aruna mercilessly. Not satisfied, she grabbed a ladle and hit Aruna with it.
BUGG!
BUUGG!
"Feel that!" Selena screamed, gasping for breath.
Aruna sobbed, her shoulders heaving, and she covered her wet body with her hands. She tried to protect herself from her sister's blows.
"That's enough, Selena," Claudia said flatly.
"Be grateful, Aruna. I'm in a good mood because my son got a good job. Otherwise, I'd have dunked your disgusting face in a tub of water so you couldn't breathe!" Claudia threatened coldly.
Aruna collapsed to the waterlogged floor in tears.
"Finish all that laundry, or you won't be allowed to go to work. Understand?!" Claudia snapped.
"Come on, Selena. Let's go. We have to celebrate your success. Don't forget, Selena, you have to attract the wealthy and handsome men at that hotel so you can live a better life," Claudia said, proudly stroking Selena's head.
After the door closed, signaling Claudia and Selena had left, Aruna remained curled up on the floor, crying. Slowly, she got up, changed her clothes, and resumed her work.
For Aruna, this had become a regular occurrence since her father married Claudia. She didn't even know where her father was now.
After her mother died, Aruna's father remarried, taking his daughter, Selena, with him. However, her father's business went bankrupt, and he became an alcoholic who rarely returned home.
Claudia, hurt by feeling cheated by Aruna's father, took out her anger on Aruna. Since childhood, the girl had been a constant outlet for Claudia's hatred.
But Aruna never left. The house was the only thing her late mother had left her. After her father fell into poverty, he sold all his possessions to pay off debts.
Eventually, they moved to the small town where Aruna's mother was born and lived with Claudia and Selena.
To make ends meet, Claudia opened a laundry service. But Aruna, always the victim of her hatred, was forced to work from a young age. Even when Aruna was in junior high school and sick, Claudia still made her do the laundry.
Unable to afford an automatic washing machine, Claudia only had a dryer. All the laundry was done by hand. After it was finished, it was dried in a dryer.
"Haaah... finally done. My whole body aches..." Aruna muttered, lying on the floor and staring at the ceiling, which was starting to grow moldy from the rainwater seepage.
Tears welled up in her eyes, but she fought back. Despite her frequent crying, Aruna's heart was as strong as steel.
"Mom... I'm sorry, I don't have the money to repair this house yet," she whispered softly.
KNOCK! KNOCK! KNOCK!
"Excuse me, I need to get some clothes," a voice came from outside.
"Okay, just a moment," Aruna replied quickly.
She opened the door and saw her neighbor, Mrs. Allesia, standing there with a gentle smile.
"Ah, Mrs. Allesia, please sit down. I'll get the clothes."
A few minutes later, Aruna came out carrying a plastic bag filled with neatly arranged, clean, and fragrant clothes.
"Wow, they smell so good," Mrs. Allesia praised, accepting the package. But her eyes immediately fell on Aruna's face. "Aruna, what's wrong with your face?"
Aruna stepped back slightly, trying to smile. "Ah, I fell, Mrs. Allesia."
"Did Claudia hit you again?" Allesia asked sharply.
Aruna remained silent.
"That woman... has she lost her mind?" Allesia muttered angrily.
"Ma'am, it wasn't my mother. I just... had a little argument with Selena," Aruna replied quickly.
"Again! If it wasn't Claudia, it would have been Selena! I really have to report them to the police!" Allesia said firmly.
"No, Madam, please don't. I beg you. It doesn't hurt anymore," Aruna pleaded, her eyes welling with tears.
Allesia looked at the girl with pity and then gently stroked her head. "You are truly as kind as an angel, Aruna... just like your mother."
Aruna smiled weakly. Her heart ached, but she swallowed the pain silently.
