Chapter 9Ethan mentally cursed himself. He hadn’t meant to say any of that. He was done with Gael, or he’d never be done, but he’d built a wall around himself. Nothing Gael did could hurt him, or so he tried to convince himself. Jamie was a good kid. Ethan enjoyed talking to him, but he saw him as a child. Not a child-child, but someone who could’ve been his child. Someone he should be there for and guide, should he need it. Not take advantage of. They drove in silence, and exhaustion tugged at Ethan. Maybe it had been a bad idea to go with Gael. Part of him clearly hadn’t learned from his mistakes and still wanted to be around him. His more rational side understood distance was the safest option. His heart wouldn’t survive being ripped apart one more time, so he couldn’t let Gael in.
