Dan, the man she loved, trusted and had always dreamed of spending her whole life with, was in front of her, entwined with another woman, not just any woman, but the woman he claimed to be his distant cousin.
The woman's eyes got a glimpse of the disoriented Jean and intentionally continued moaning and writhing under Dan, her waist arching in pleasure as Dan f*cks her with a gentle stroke, completely unaware of Jean's presence.
Jean's heart was still frozen, torn apart, and she felt a strong sense of hurt and disgust.
Unconsciously, she exclaimed, "Dan!" She staggered back, still shaking her head in denial and betrayal.
Her trembling leg threatened to give way beneath her as she ran out of the room with her hands over her mouth. When she got to the sitting room, she collapsed on the floor, wallowing in self-pity and regret.
Flashes of various memories came flooding back: the warnings her friends gave her, the doubts in her mind, and the stupid things she did for him.
"How could he do this to me? After all the promises he made and the sacrifices I made, it all went down the drain. He broke my heart into a thousand pieces, even though I had trusted him with it." She lamented and slowly slipped into her disjointed thoughts, involuntarily changing her position and sitting down.
Tears streamed down her cheeks, and her thoughts remained on him, hoping for him to call her and explain or wake her up from her dream.
A notification sound blared from her phone, which was in her pocket, jolting her out of her reverie and denial.
She pulled out her phone and stared at it, and when her eyes caught a glimpse of the message, she jumped up, unable to believe what she was seeing. "Immediate resumption of the new place of investigation." She read aloud, attempting to process the message.
"Using the normal protocol, a transfer resumption is supposed to take at least three weeks," she murmured, her thoughts drifting away from her cheating boyfriend.
" I love you, babe." She heard a feminine voice from the back prompting her to snap her head backwards.
"I love you as well," said Dan, the second voice that appeared.
"I hope that b***h is gone. Oh!!!." She heard the girl say, and immediately, the statement pierced her heart and caused her eyes to well up with tears.
Her body shook with anguish and pain, and she tried to hold back tears as her legs felt like jelly.
" Get your pitiful self out of my house when you are done," Dan said and pushed her out of the way. He walked closer to his keys, picked them up, and turned to walk away.
"Dan! She seduced you, right? No, she threatened you with something. I mean, you can't possibly do out of your own will!" She sobs, her stomach churning as she continues convincing herself even though her mind says otherwise.
" You are f*cking pathetic! A parasite at that. Do you think I would stoop so low to threaten him?" The lady scoffed, her face etched with disgust as she glared at Jean in disbelief.
" How could someone be so stupid and in love!" She wondered, her gaze not leaving the teary Jean.
Dan, who had been quiet, spoke up," Let's go, babe. She's my past. Obsessed Ex!" He whispered just enough for her to hear.
"Obsessed Ex? Dan! We didn't have any argument. We never broke up."
" Just say something, Dan. Tell me it's a prank, that it's just a surprise proposal. You wanted to make it real, that was why you had s****l intercourse with her, " she lamented, knowing fully well how stupid she sounded.
"You are stupid! F*ck off!" Dan yelled, twisting his face in more disgust as he walked away, his hand across the neck of his new girl as they stepped out of the house.
The tears she had been holding back spilled uncontrollably onto her cheeks.
Regrets and anger filled her soul, almost drowning her. She squeezed her chest in pain and groaned.
But after a while, the tears stopped, and she felt empty.
Inside, as if her body and mind had been stripped away, leaving only the shell.
She took a deep breath and stood up, slowly considering whether she could do this.
She walked into their shared room and started gathering her most valuable items into a bag.
Although she was at her breaking point, she knew she had to get out of there fast. Glancing around the room, she took in the sights she was familiar with.
His betrayal had splashed all over her mind, covering it like a thick smoke.
She experienced mixed emotions as she left the house: relief and sadness. Everything she knew was being left behind.
She did, however, sense a flicker of hope at the same moment. Maybe, just maybe, she could start again. She could find a new home, a new life, and start all over in New York City, her new workplace.
She entered her car, parked in the parking lot, where it had been for days, and drove down the long driveway. She was resolved to find a better future and was putting the past behind her.
Even though she had no idea what the future would hold, she was prepared to make the initial move.
She took the exit out of the city and eventually came to a busy road that led to a tiny, urban area.
Her car jackknifed backwards due to the screeching of her two front tyres on the slick and congested road.
Fearful, she peered around, attempting to make sense of what was going on.
Another car smashed into her, and before she realised it, her car repeatedly overturned before coming to rest on the ground.
Her head struck the front window, causing the glass to shatter into four long pieces that pierced her shoulder.
She closed her eyes, All her earlier situations came rushing, her mind racing, and then she began regretting her decision to put her trust in him.
What possessed her to confide her happiness and serenity in him?
"I received a warning, even a threat; I waved off my instincts and trusted him." She was blinded by love, lost in his kind words and tender treats, and she abandoned her family to follow him. She also loved him more than her job, despite the fact that she was doing well.
She recalled her friend's advice and outbursts about their relationship.
Her regrets were claiming her life faster than the stabbings.
She wished for his life to be miserable even as she was about to die.
She only heard a faded yell from a masculine voice before falling unconscious.
***********
Her eyelashes fluttered slowly open but were quickly squinted back as a ray of light shone into her eyes.
"She is awake," she heard a feminine voice from the entrance, and she forced herself to open her eyes.
Her view was met with white ceilings and the infusion fluid hanging above her, bringing back waves of flashbacks, including the pain from her wounded arm, which had already been bandaged.
She was about to lament and drown in regrets when a masculine voice came up from the entrance, making her turn her head.
Then, the most handsome stranger with mesmerising blue eyes, chiselled features, and the height of a model stepped into the ward, his steps and stare exuding coldness and danger.
"How is she?" he asked the nurse who appeared behind him.
"She has been sleeping and receiving treatments for the past three days; we just need to do a final check to see if she is completely fine and also to disinfect her arm," The nurse said, grinning widely and blushing.
"Three days!!" Jean exclaimed, her unbandaged hands roaming around the bed and medication table beside her in search of her phone, oblivious to the restrictions and discomfort the cannula was causing her
"What the heck are you doing?" the young man inquired, his eyes widening as he noticed the bleeding from her strained hand.
The nurse rushed towards Jean and roughly held her down. "Please, calm down," she said quietly.
" I need to resume my new station before the end of this week, " She muttered consecutively until her head snapped up and her gaze fixed on the young man in the room, again.
" Are you the drunk driver who made me have an accident?" She questioned, making Sin look dazed and perplexed.
