" What do you mean by drunk driving? You were obviously the one who ran into me. And who the actual f**k sold you the audacity to yell at me?" Sin replied, his voice frosty and laced with confusion. He was dazed that she could talk to him like that.
Jean rolled her eyes at him and faced the nurse, who looked scared and her face drained of blood. The fear was emitting from her body even without actions, making Jean a little anxious.
Sin was about to utter another statement when his phone rang out. Angry, he pulled it out and swiped to receive.
" Don, the Rangers cartel is denying the allegations and insisting that Ryan never delivered the weapons." A thick voice sounded from the other side of the line.
Jean's head spun up immediately, curious, anxious, and filled with mixed, unexplained emotions.
She looked at the nurse, who still maintained the scared features.
" You know what to do. I must meet them at Ext 45." With that, he hung up and faced Jean. He glared at her for a minute and wondered why and how he came checking up on a bloody citizen. He then shifted his gaze to the nurse, who was all sweaty.
" The bills will be paid to the bursary department in five minutes." Taking a last glance at Jean, he exited the ward. His steps exude power and authority.
" Who the f**k is he? Weapon? Delivering? Ext 45?"She muttered, her glares fixated on the entrance. She was nudged out of her thoughts as the nurse rushed towards her.
" You are clueless and fearless!!" the nurse voiced, putting on the hand gloves to treat the self-inflicted wound on her hand.
" That's SIN"
Her eyes widened in astounding silence as her face went pale.
Speechless, she tried processing the news she had just heard. Her disjointed thoughts and series of questions running through her mind made her mumble involuntarily.
" Are you joking?" She cracked a forced smile nervously.
" Do I look like I am? The man you just talked rashly to was SIN, the crime lord!" the nurse half-yelled, her fears clear in her tone.
" Oh, my!!" Jean exclaimed with mixed emotions; fear, anxiety, and happiness. Although fear was the least of her problems, since she felt her job was going to come easier.
" You are smiling!" The nurse questioned, shocked at her reaction. The smile that spread on Jean's lips confused her.
" Sorry, I need to go. I have jobs to attend to, " Jean muttered, grabbed her phone, and was about to rush out of the ward. Mistakenly, she hit her bandaged arm on the wall. A wrenching yell escaped her throat with the resonating pain coursing through her veins up to her skull, which responded with a banging headache.
" Are you okay?" The nurse rushed towards her with a piteous look.
" I'm okay!!" Jean struggled to reassure her, her voice trembling underneath. She took a deep breath, struggling to reduce the throbbing pain that pulsed through her arm by applying little pressure.
The nurse's pitiful expression didn’t wear off. She continued looking at Jean, who had a forced smile spreading on her lips.
Realising that the nurse would not give in to her fake reassuring look, she cleared her throat, " Hmmm... I was just.. clumsy. It's not that painful. " It came like a whisper, and then she forced a laugh before turning to walk out of the ward.
" Don't forget to help me sign the consent form for discharge. I'm Jean by name. " She quickly stepped out of the ward and strode towards the reception in a quickened but steady and silent step.
" Excuse me! Where are you going? You need to sign out and complete the patient's information. " The record officer at the reception raised awareness, but Jean had already stepped out of the hospital gate.
The buzzing view of this part of New York City snatched her view. Everyone was walking like they had no problem. Soon, her mind raced, and the reality of what had happened earlier hit her. SIN? The name echoed in her mind, heavily.
She finally got to have an encounter with him, but not the way she thought they would meet.
Her pulse quickened consistently, not from the pain but from the weight of her thoughts.
She shook her head, trying to get the weighing thoughts out of her head and think of the way forward, when a loud horn jolted her out of her reverie.
" Move out of the way, Explorer!!" a voice hollered from behind, making her realise she had been walking in the middle of the road for a while now. Slowly, she crossed to the other side of the road.
She flagged down a cab and entered, “ 1PP, please” she said, and a cab pulled up and ushered her in.
“ Your transportation fee is $35. The account details are there”, the cab driver said and pointed at a printed paper placed on the dashboard.
☆☆☆☆Three Days Later☆☆☆☆
“ You are supposed to meet with your other team members the moment you resume, I thought you were the best detective in South California”, the pot-bellied team leader yelled, his eyes squinting in disgust.
Annoyed, Jean closed her eyes and took a deep breath before talking, “ I'm sorry, sir, I tried my best to discuss with them, but it seems…..”
Her statement was cut short by a loud bang on the table.
“ Stop making excuses and get to work.” He yelled, “ What's the progress?”
" Stay calm. Just show them your capabilities and ignore them. This is a new workplace. " She warned herself internally, calming her clenching fist.
" I'm sorry, sir, I've been trying to create a plan to invade his cartel in camouflage, but since nobody is willing to work with me, I've been finding it hard”
The team leader squinted his eyes, calming down a bit, “ That's not my problem, The prime minister has given us a time range and I'm very sure you know what that means, including the consequences of failing”
“ Very well, Sir,” She voiced and saluted him before turning to walk out of the office, and almost immediately, her phone rang.
It was one of her informants. She swiped it and placed it on her ear.
“ A weaponry agenda is taking place tomorrow, Young girls will be used as the traffickers and they are moving directly to the Western cartel, which is their main cartel”
“ Thank you!!” She cut the call and began jogging towards the hostel where she's staying.
“ SIN!!, I'M COMING FOR YOU.”
