CHAPTER 1: Our Last Anniversary
Hailey's POV A little smile played on my lips as I stepped out of the elevator, a bunch of red roses in one hand and a gift bag in the other. Tonight felt different, special. It was our third wedding anniversary, after all. Three years since I’d walked down the aisle, promising forever to Ryan Walker. My husband. My best friend. My whole world. I fumbled with the keys, unlocking the front door with that same smile. I'd actually left work early, hoping to surprise him. The watch tucked away in that bag had eaten up almost a month's worth of my savings, but it felt totally worth it. He'd mentioned wanting it ages ago. I really wanted tonight to be about us, a chance to push aside the growing distance, the late nights he was pulling, the calls I’d missed, the dates we’d had to cancel. It’s just work, I told myself. He loves me. At least, that's what I was choosing to believe. "Ryan?" I called out, stepping inside. Just… silence. A little frown creased my brow. The house was eerily quiet. Maybe he was upstairs? I took a few steps towards the staircase, and then I heard it. A woman's laugh. It stopped me dead in my tracks. A weird knot formed in my stomach. Then I heard it again, this time with a low male chuckle following. Ryan. My fingers tightened around the flowers, the stems digging into my palm. Who was even here? I started creeping up the stairs. The closer I got to our bedroom, the louder the sounds grew. My heart hammered against my ribs. Then, a woman's moan. I froze. No. Please, no. It felt like my feet were cemented to the floorboards. I desperately hoped this wasn't what I was imagining. Another moan, and this one was definitely louder, echoing down the hallway. My chest felt tight, like a band was squeezing it. The bedroom door was cracked open. My hands shook as I nudged it further. The bouquet slipped from my grasp. Red roses fanned out across the floor. It was like my whole world just imploded. Ryan was there, on our bed. And beneath him… Sophia. My best friend. The one I’d known since college, the one who knew absolutely everything about me. For a beat, everything was silent. Then Sophia turned her head. Our eyes locked. And that’s when I saw it. The smirk. A small, triumphant smirk flickered across her face. Suddenly, a chill ran through me. She’d seen me. She knew I was there. The realization hit me like a freight train. The sounds of moaning, the laughter, the door left ajar it wasn’t a coincidence. She wanted me to witness this. She wanted to inflict pain. “Hailey!” Ryan flinched, as if startled by my sudden appearance. His face drained of color. “Baby, please, just listen…” “Don’t,” I managed to whisper. Sophia slowly sat up, crossing her arms. There was no embarrassment, no shame, no guilt. Just pure smugness. Tears, hot and stinging, began to trace paths down my cheeks. I looked at the two people I’d trusted most in the world. “How long?” I asked, my voice barely audible. Ryan opened his mouth, but no words came out. Sophia just rolled her eyes. “Does it even matter?” My heart felt like it shattered. I just stared at her. And she smiled. “You were never good enough for him anyway, Hailey.” The room started to spin. Ryan immediately turned to Sophia. “Sophia!” “What?” she snapped back. “It’s the truth.” A choked, painful sound escaped me, a laugh that held more hurt than humor. Three years. That’s how long we’d been married. Three years built on a foundation of friendship. or so I thought. It all meant nothing to them, apparently. I glanced down at the ring on my finger, the one that was supposed to represent promises, loyalty, a forever kind of love. Slowly, deliberately, I pulled it off. Ryan’s eyes, when I looked up, widened in alarm. "Hailey, please, don't do this," he pleaded. I simply placed the ring on the bedside table, my hand surprisingly steady. "No," I met his gaze. "You already did." I didn't need another word. I turned and walked out. His voice, calling my name, faded behind me. I didn't stop. I didn't look back. Because somewhere deep down, I already knew this wasn't just the end of our anniversary celebration. It was the end of us.
