Chapter 5
Daisy was left speechless as she heard what her mother had said. They were actually looking for someone to arrange with her brother. What’s more, they were talking about it while they were inside the gazebo.
That was the place where she and her brother used to play when they were still young.
Remembering those days saddened her. However, hearing that he would be engaged to another striked an unimaginable pain in her heart.
Seeing that she was keeping silent, her mother looked at her and asked for her opinion. "What do you think Daisy?"
"Mom, why do you need to do that?" Daisy asked while trying her best not to sneer nor show that she was against the idea.
Their mother looked at her intently and reasoned out with her arms without open, expressing her point. “Because I never heard your brother courting any woman in his life? Besides, he’s at the right age. I want to see him settle down soon.”
Settle down? Oh my gosh, she’s really devoted to this idea…
Daisy was already panicking inside by just the mere idea of seeing her brother being married to another woman.
Taking a deep breath, Daisy rocked her brain out just to think of more words to say to change her mother’s thoughts.
“Mom, what’s the rush? Liam and I are still young. We’re only twenty five years old. We just started exploring life and are still on our way of being well-known in our chosen careers. Besides, wouldn’t that distract my brother from his work; from expanding our family business?”
By this time, Daisy was more like blubbering already just to justify her disapproval.
Her mother smiles widely with confidence flickering in her eyes. “Your brother is very intelligent. I am sure he can handle it just fine. Besides, aren’t you excited about it? Wouldn’t it be nice for you to socialize with your future sister-in-law?”
Hearing that made her even more annoyed. She didn’t want to share her brother with anyone, much less another woman! She wanted him all for her and her alone!
Her heartbeat accelerated with annoyance. Since she couldn’t stand where their conversation was going anymore, she just stood up so as to not say more words that she shouldn't have voiced out.
“Mom, I just remembered. There’s something I need to check in the mall for the new project I’m handling. I have to leave now,” she said and immediately gave her mother a kiss on the cheek.
She didn’t even give her mother a chance to refute as she already went on her way, not waiting for a reply.
“Take care!” Near the door, she heard her mother’s loud voice as she hurriedly bid goodbye to her. Taking a glimpse back, she waved back at her and walked out from their house.
Daisy was busy looking around the mall for a set of house decorations when she felt someone coming near her and suddenly holding her wrist. Before she knew it, she already felt a sharp object being pressed on her neck.
“Listen to me if you want to live,” a man said over her ear. His breath stinking with alcohol blew onto her ears and face, making her scorch up her nose in disgust.
Daisy’s body stiffened as she dared not to make any movements in fear that one wrong move and the knife pressed against her neck would cut through her.
The man holding her was obviously drunk. Everyone around them who saw what was happening got startled before panic broke out to everyone. Most women let out deafening screams while others who were able to remain calm pulled out their smartphones and started recording what was happening.
Instead of panicking like the rest, they even seemed a bit entertained.
The next thing Daisy heard was the sound of sirens and police cars approaching together with an ambulance.
Police came rushing to where they were and started negotiating with the man.
“Sir, please, you have to calm down,” one of the police said in a gentle voice while slowly trying to approach us closer.
“Don’t come any closer!” The kidnapper shouted as he pressed the knife closer to her neck and pain rushed through Daisy. She could feel the cold liquid dripping down on her neck down to her collarbone.
“Alright, Sir. Please, calm down…” The police stopped in his tracks and raised his arms in the air as a sign of defeat so as to not trigger the kidnapper even more.
Her breathing became uneven as she closed her eyes tightly. And right at that moment, all she could see was her brother. She could see the image of Lian while he was inside her bedroom and handling her water that night before he left her. Afterwards, a sound of laughter from a woman echoed in her ears… an unfamiliar woman whom she thought would be the one marrying her brother in the future.
For some inexplicable reason, that seemed to hurt her and made her anxious way more than the situation she was currently in.
No! She wouldn't let that happen. She didn’t want to die yet. As sinful as it was, she loved her brother. She wanted him to be hers no matter what the consequence would be.
With newfound courage and not much thinking, she stomped her heels on the feet of the kidnapper who immediately grunted in pain. Everything happened too fast and she felt a sharp object being struck into her stomach.
She screamed as loud as she could before she lost consciousness.
‘No… I can’t die yet…’
She didn’t know how long she was completely out, but soon after, she could hear her brother’s voice from a distance, saying that he loves her. Without hesitation, she mustered the strength to reply. However, instead of saying that she loves him as well, she did something different.
She took a deep breath, and asked him how much he loves her in a low voice. It’s faint, but she knew that he should be able to hear what she said.
