I’d gotten lost in a book, something I usually did on Mark’s college nights. Feeling a need to stretch, I glanced over at the mantle clock. It was a quarter past ten. I wasn’t worried…much. I tried to get back into my book, but it was no good. Standing, I walked over to the window and peeked through the curtains at an empty street. We didn’t get much through traffic, so when I heard a car coming, and it seemed to slow down, I began to relax. However, the car passed the window; it wasn’t ours. I put on my coat and took a stroll down the street. There was nothing to see, so I came back home, hoping the phone hadn’t rung in my absence. I looked at the clock again; half ten.
