THE PRINCE AND THE FORBIDDEN DOOR
CHAPTER ONE: THE PRINCE AND THE FORBIDDEN DOOR The night Elena Rose entered the royal palace, she had no idea her life was about to change forever. She was only a village girl, the daughter of a struggling woman named Margaret Rose. Her days were filled with household chores, caring for her sick mother, and looking after her younger brother, Thomas. She had never imagined that she would stand beneath the crystal chandeliers of the royal palace, surrounded by nobles dressed in silk and jewels. But fate had other plans. That evening, the palace was celebrating Prince Adrian Blackthorne's birthday. Every noble family in the kingdom had been invited, and servants hurried through the grand halls carrying silver trays and sparkling goblets. Elena had come to help serve refreshments. She wore a simple blue dress and kept her head lowered, hoping nobody would notice her. She did not belong among princes and princesses. Before she left home, her mother had held her hand with unusual seriousness. "Elena, listen carefully," Margaret had said. "You may go anywhere in that palace, but never enter the northern wing." "Why, Mother?" Margaret had hesitated before answering. "Some doors are sealed for a reason. Promise me you will stay away." Elena had promised, though she did not understand her mother's fear. Around her neck hung an old silver pendant that had belonged to her grandmother. Margaret had insisted that she never remove it. "Keep it close," she had whispered. "One day, you may understand why." Elena had thought nothing more of it. Until she entered the palace. The Cursed Prince Prince Adrian Blackthorne was everything the kingdom expected a future king to be: handsome, powerful, wealthy, and dangerously mysterious. He had dark hair, sharp features, and eyes that seemed to carry a thousand unspoken secrets. Many young noblewomen dreamed of marrying him, but Adrian had never shown interest in any of them. Rumors followed him everywhere. Some said he was heartless. Others believed he had been cursed by an ancient witch. The strangest rumor claimed that anyone he truly loved would suffer a terrible fate. Elena dismissed the stories as palace gossip. That changed when she saw him. She was carrying a tray of drinks when the prince entered the ballroom. Conversations stopped, and everyone bowed. Elena looked up at precisely the wrong moment. Their eyes met. For one strange second, the noise of the ballroom seemed to disappear. Adrian stared at her as though he recognized something he could not explain. Then his expression hardened. He turned away. Elena frowned. Arrogant prince, she thought. As if looking at him is a crime. She returned to her duties, determined to forget the encounter. But later that evening, she became lost while searching for the kitchens. The corridors grew quieter. The golden lamps became fewer, and the walls were decorated with ancient paintings whose eyes seemed to follow her. At the end of a narrow passage stood a black door. Elena knew immediately that she had found the northern wing. She should have turned back. Instead, she noticed a strange silver light shining through the gap beneath the door. Her pendant grew warm against her skin. A whisper drifted through the corridor. "Come closer." Elena froze. "Who's there?" No one answered. She reached for the handle. The door opened by itself. The Forbidden Room Beyond the door was a chamber filled with shadows and ancient symbols. Silver candles floated in the air, illuminating a large mirror covered in strange markings. At the center of the room stood Prince Adrian. He turned sharply when Elena entered. "What are you doing here?" Elena nearly dropped the tray she was carrying. "I got lost." "Then leave." "You don't have to speak to me as if I've committed a crime." His eyes flashed. "You have entered a forbidden part of the palace. You have no idea what you are dealing with." "Then perhaps someone should explain it instead of shouting at people." Adrian stared at her, apparently shocked that a servant had dared to answer him. Before he could respond, the mirror behind him began to shake. A dark mist poured from its surface. Adrian's expression changed instantly. "Get behind me!" The mist twisted into a monstrous shadow that stretched across the chamber. Strange whispers filled the air, and the silver candles flickered violently. Adrian raised his hand. Dark magical symbols appeared around his fingers, but the shadow swallowed them. He staggered. Elena watched in horror as black veins of magic spread across his wrist. "Adrian!" She did not know why she called his name. She only knew that he was in danger. Without thinking, she reached for him. The moment her fingers touched his hand, a brilliant silver light exploded between them. The shadow screamed. The entire chamber shook as the darkness was pulled back into the mirror. The ancient symbols blazed, and Elena felt something awaken deep inside her. Then everything went silent. Adrian stared at her hand. A silver crescent had appeared on his palm. On Elena's palm was a matching mark, shaped like a tiny crown surrounding a crescent moon. Neither could speak. "What are you?" Adrian finally whispered. Elena pulled her hand away. "I don't know!" The mirror suddenly illuminated the room with silver writing. Words appeared across its surface in an ancient language neither of them had seen before. Yet somehow, Elena understood them. THE CURSED PRINCE HAS FOUND HIS TRUE LOVE. Adrian stepped backward. "No." The mirror cracked. A final whisper emerged from the darkness. "The prophecy has awakened." Then the light vanished. The Secret of Elena Rose Adrian grabbed Elena's wrist, studying the strange mark. "How did you do that?" "I didn't do anything!" "You touched me, and the curse disappeared." "Then perhaps you should thank me instead of interrogating me!" He released her, but his expression remained troubled. "Nobody has ever been able to stop it." Elena looked at the mirror. "What curse?" Adrian's face became cold. "Forget what you saw. Never speak of this room to anyone." Before she could demand an explanation, footsteps sounded in the corridor. Adrian hurried her toward a side door. "Go home. And whatever happens, do not tell anyone about the mark." "Why should I trust you?" For the first time, his expression softened. "Because if the wrong person discovers what happened tonight, your life will never be the same." Elena left the palace with more questions than answers. All the way home, her pendant remained warm, and the silver mark on her palm glowed faintly beneath her sleeve. When she reached her family's small cottage, her mother was waiting by the door. One look at Elena's face made Margaret rise from her chair. "What happened?" Elena tried to hide her hand. But Margaret caught sight of the glowing mark. Her face drained of color. "No," she whispered. "It cannot be." "Mother, what is this? What happened to me?" Margaret took Elena's hand and examined the crescent and crown. Then she began to tremble. "Where did you see him?" "Who?" "The prince!" Elena stared at her. "How do you know?" Margaret closed the door and led her daughter inside. She sat her down, then reached for the silver pendant around Elena's neck. "Your grandmother was named Seraphina Rose," she said. "She possessed a magical gift that connected her to the royal family. For years, I prayed that the gift had disappeared from our bloodline." Elena's heart pounded. "What does that have to do with Adrian?" Margaret looked toward the dark window. "Prince Adrian is cursed. Anyone he loves becomes a target of the magic surrounding him. The curse has already taken more from that family than you can imagine." "Then why did touching him stop it?" Her mother had no answer. Instead, she pulled Elena into a tight embrace. "You must stay away from him." "But—" "Promise me, Elena! Whatever you feel, whatever happens, do not let yourself fall in love with that prince." Elena thought of Adrian's troubled eyes and the strange warmth she had felt when their hands touched. She wanted to promise. She truly did. But deep inside her, something had already changed. Far away, in the northern wing of the palace, Adrian stood before the broken mirror. His silver mark glowed beneath his skin. For the first time in years, the curse had fallen silent. Then a new message appeared across the cracked glass. SHE IS THE KEY TO YOUR SALVATION. A second line slowly formed beneath it. SHE IS ALSO THE KEY TO YOUR DESTRUCTION. Adrian clenched his fist. "I will not let you hurt her," he whispered. From somewhere deep inside the mirror, a woman's voice answered. "You cannot protect the woman you are destined to love, my prince." The silver candles went out one by one. And in the darkness, something began to laugh
